Great Juve, poker against Basel
/12 12 2002
Was anyone expecting an answer after Brescia? Here it is.
Juventus confirmed to be unbeatable at Delle Alpi in
Champions League. In the first home match of the Group D,
Lippi's team outscored Basel 4-0, thanks to the goals scored
by Trezeguet (happy comeback), Montero, Tacchinardi and
Del Piero. Whiteandblacks reached the winter pause with
four points, only two behind the leader of the Group,
Manchester (today 2-0 against Deportivo), before the double
meeting against the English team, scheduled in February,
on the 19th and the 25th.
Now let's face Lazio, waited on Sunday evening, always at
Delle Alpi.
There was snow waiting for Juventus at Delle Alpi for the
last Champions League's match of the 2002. Ther was also Basel,
ready to face whiteandblacks, that in front of their supporters
won all the first phase's matches. But there was also David
Trezeguet. And the French striker, after the match against
Reggina, played as a starter alongside Del Piero in Juventus'
attack. Behind them there was Nedved, with Zambrotta, Tacchinardi
and Davids in the midfield.
In the defence Lippi picked up Thuram, Montero, Iuliano and
Birindelli, while Buffon, as usually, was the goalkeeper.
Under the snowfall the Portuguese referee Batista decided to
use an orange ball. And the ball became even more special at 2'
when David Trezeguet scored with a header on a Del Piero's
corner deviated by Iuliano: it was really a good comeback for
Trezegol. At 8' the Swiss team tried to answer with a cross
by Hakan Yakin deviated over the bar by Rossi. One minute
later it was Gimenez's turn to try to score: Buffon was ready.
At 16' Juventus was back in the attack: cross by Tacchinardi
and header by Nedved, slightly over the bar, and few seconds
later also Del Piero was dangerous.
At 21' another chance for the second goal: great shot by
Nedved not stopped by Zuberbuhler and Trezeguet, after a
contrast with a Swiss defender, couldn't find the proper
cohordination to kick.
At 27' another powerful shot by Zambrotta, high over the bar.
At 29' Basilea tried to draw: header by Gimenez saved with no
problems by Buffon.
At 33' it came the second goal. Great free kick by Del Piero,
Zuberbuhler deviated on the bar and Montero was the quickest
for the decisive tap-in: 2-0.
At 38' it nearly came the third goal: mistake of Zuberbuhler
and Del Piero nearly scored from more than 30 metres.
At 43' it finally came the third goal: Tacchinardi kicked a
powerful shot that left the Swiss goalkeeper helpless. 3-0
for Juventus.
The second half started with a change in the Swiss team,
with Varela in for Gimenez. Basel tried to start strongly
but Juventus stroke again. On a quick counterattack Del Piero
assisted Nedved, fouled by Esposito: it was penalty, easily
converted by the Captain for the 4-0.
Buffon made his first save of the second half at 8' on a
Hakan Yakin's header.
At 13' first change also for Juventus, with Ferrara in for
Thuram.
At 18' it came the second substitution: Trezeguet went out
for Zalayeta.
At 22' it came another emotion: first Buffon saved on a
Zwssig's shot from outside the penalty area, and on the
counterattack, Nedved was too altruist trying to assist
instead of kicking towards the Swiss goal from a good
position.
At 26' end of the match also for Del Piero, out for Conte.
The match went towards its end with the usual script: the
Swiss team trying to score and whiteandblacks ready to make
dangerous counterattacks, like at 46' when, on a Zambrotta's
assist, Nedved forced Zuberbuhler to a difficult save, for
the last time before Batista's final whistle.
