And this is only one of her many acts for charity By SUZANNE SNG Photo/Feeling surprisingly good after the fast was Kit Chan, who wanted to do it again. The fast was part of World Vision's 30 Hour Famine. -- Steven Lee AFTER running on an empty stomach for more than 26 hours, surprisingly, homegrown singer Kit Chan felt so good she wanted to do it every week. "I'm such a glutton usually," said the 27-year-old, who was on a 30-hour fast last Friday and Saturday to raise awareness about famine. At 2.30 pm last Saturday, with less than four hours to go before she could eat again, she spoke to Life! over the phone: "I've been on diets before, but when the motivation is dieting, it doesn't work. "When you have a bigger motivation, it's not as difficult." As the Youth Ambassador of the National Youth Council, she volunteered to put herself through the experience of being hungry, as part of World Vision's 30 Hour Famine. There will be a camp for over 300 youths next month, where they will similarly go through 30 hours of starvation. Chan completed her own "famine" earlier because she would have to attend an award ceremony in Beijing during that time. Her 30-hour famine began on Friday at noon and she broke fast only on Saturday at 6 pm. The toughest hours, she revealed with a laugh, were between 8 and 10 pm on her first day. She had gone for dinner with a few friends, but had to abstain while they munched on their food. Earlier, just three hours into her self-imposed famine during the press conference for the event last Friday afternoon, she was still radiant and beaming. The vegetarian bee hoon that she had taken for lunch had not been digested -- yet. "Although I have been in charity events as a celebrity, sometimes I feel they lack the personal touch," she said. "If I can use glamour and celebrity status to help, great. "But charity does not equal glamour." She related how, after her trip to Nepal in February, she came back with a dream to lead a team of students to build a school there. When she heard that World Vision, the largest privately-funded Christian non-profit relief organisation in the world, was looking for someone to sing the theme song and film a music video in Africa, she volunteered her services immediately. In June or July, she will make her way to Ethiopia to shoot the video, as well as visit the various World Vision projects in progress there. And at the end of the year, for two weeks, she will be in either Vietnam or Cambodia to build the school of her dreams. "I'm not as pampered as you think. I'm not afraid of getting dark. Haven't you heard of sunblock?" she joked. And as her self-imposed fast neared its end, she added: "I feel good. This is another step up in my mental strength. I feel so good that I'm considering doing it every week." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.twbbs.org) ◆ From: g883456.YA.ab.nthu.edu.tw
