Singaporean Kit Chan Kit-yee was last seen on stage in the Snow.Wolf.Lake
production, for which she got rave reviews. Her latest live-musical role
is wowing the critics again - and is turning out to be a spiritual experience
as well (and not just because of her ethereal voice). Playing the lead role
in The Legend for 12 nights last month in Hong Kong, Chan delivered a
hauntingly beautiful portrayal of Teresa Teng Li-jun, the late Taiwanese
singing sensation. The inspiration for the other-worldly performances?
Apparently Teng herself. Though the songstress passed away suddenly three
years ago, her presence could be felt during the production. One story
relates how an auspicious costume accident had Chan wearing a pink dress
(instead of the originally planned black number) to a key promotion event.
Teng's relatives noted that pink was Teresa's favorite color. Said Chan's
assistant: "Before the shows, Kit flew to Taiwan to visit Teresa's grave.
Kit believed Teresa herself gave her some insight into playing the role."
Since she began her career in 1989, Chan has had eight chart-topping albums
and established herself as a star on the Chinese pop scene. This latest
triumph, however, has industry folks talking about Chan as a legend-in-the-
making.
