SHOW--CONCERN TIME
Lambasted for leaving after an earthquake struck, Kit Chan returned to
Taipei last week to help with the fund-raising efforts and clear the
air

SHE is a singer with a set of powerful lungs. But homegrown chanteuse
Kit Chan does not exercise her vocal chords while crooning only.
She believes in voicing out whatever is on her mind as well.
In her forthright manner, she took the initiative in speaking out
about her reaction to flee the recent Taiwan earthquake and subsequent
criticisms of her actions.
"When I went back to raise funds for the disaster, the reporters in
Taiwan were too embarrassed to ask why I left," the 26-year-old
revealed at a press conference last week.
"So when I went on cable TV, I said to them: 'I know what you're
thinking, and I want to clarify what I did.' "
She added in fluent Mandarin, laced with a tinge of Taiwanese
accent: "It's not good to think about something and yet not
voice it out."
The singer, who has made good in Hongkong and Taiwan, was in Taipei
to promote her latest album Dazzling when the earthquake struck in
the early hours of Sept 21.
Shocked and shaken by the effects of the natural disaster -- her hotel
was badly damaged, the TV in her room was shattered -- she took less
than 12 hours to pack her bags and hop on the first flight home.
Her instinctive reaction was picked up by the press in Hongkong and
Taiwan, where she has made a name for herself with both her albums
and stage musicals.
They lambasted her for being a fair-weather friend, abandoning Taiwan
in its hour of need.
When she returned to Taipei last week to help with the fund-raising
efforts, she cleared the air by saying: "After the earthquake, I felt
like I had escaped a calamity. And my first instinct was to rush home.
"I went back to Taiwan later not because I felt that I had to make
amends for leaving. I really wanted to help because the Taiwanese people
I've befriended had all been so good to me."
She is back in town to promote Dazzling, her first album since leaving
Polygram to join What's Music this year.
The work is a marked change from her previous ones, such as Deep In
The Act, which were influenced by her involvement in stage musicals
such as Jacky Cheung's Snow.Wolf.Lake and the tribute to Teresa Teng,
The Legend.
Speaking without qualms about her previous music direction, she said:
"In the past, I felt that my singing was too grand, too theatrical,
too exaggerated. Now, my singing style is different -- refreshing,
simplified and back to basics."
She also said that she used to stretch her vocal chords to the limits
but, now, has restrained herself to better portray her emotions, such
as in the title track, Xuan Yao.
In Chinese, it could also mean boast.
She explained that she expressed a wider range of emotions in a narrower
music scope, adding: "I had to sing like I was heart-broken, but at the
same time, still boast about being alone by myself."

因為地震而離開台灣，因此受到嚴責的陳潔儀，上周回到台北參加賑災活動，並且澄清
流言。

她是個肺活量很大的歌手，但是天生就有一副好歌喉的陳潔儀平常除了低吟外並沒有刻意
去練她的嗓子。
她也篤信：心裡有不愉快的時候就把它大聲說(唱)出來。
她直截了當地主動說明了她在地震時離開台灣的反應，及接踵而來對她這種舉動的批評。
「當我回來台灣為這次的地震募款時，記者們因為覺得太過尷尬而沒有問我當時為何離
開，」26歲的她在記者會上如是說。
「因此我上有線電視，我跟他們說:我不知道你們怎麼想，但我要澄清為什麼我要這麼做
。」
她並且用了帶著台灣口音的流利國語說：「在真相尚未明白時就妄加猜測是不好的。」
這位在香江及台灣走紅的歌手，在21日的淩晨，地震發生之前，正在台北為她的最新專
輯"炫耀"作宣傳。
因為被天災的威力驚人嚇到--她住的飯店嚴重的損毀，房間裡的電視機被地震摔碎--
她花了12個鐘頭不到的時間將行李打包，並飛快的搭上第一班飛機離開。
她當時這個直覺的反應被香港和台灣的媒體提出質問，而她在這兩地已經因為專輯和音樂
劇名聲大噪了。
媒體們嚴責她，說她見風轉舵，在台灣需要幫助的時侯棄之不顧。
當她上周回到台北幫忙參加賑災義演時，她澄清說：「那時地震過後，我覺得好像逃過了
一場劫難，而我的直覺反應是立刻趕回家去。」
「我稍後回到台灣不是因為覺得要為我的離去做辯護，是真的想要幫助台灣人們，因為他
們都是我的好朋友。」
她現在回到了家鄉為她的第一張加盟上華國語大碟"炫耀"作宣傳。
這張作品和她以往的專輯(例如入戲太深)大大不同。"入戲太深"是受到她所參與演出的音
樂舞台劇(例如與張學友合作的"雪狼湖"及獻給鄧麗君的"THE LEGEND")的影響.
談到了以前作品的方向，她說：「在過去的專輯裡，我覺得我唱的太花俏、太炫麗。現在
，我唱歌方式不同了--清新、簡單且回歸到基本面。」
她也說她過去把聲音繃得太緊，幾乎到了極限。但是現在，她壓抑自已的聲音，使得聲音
更能表現出她真實的情緒，就像她的專輯名稱--炫耀。
她也解釋說她試著用較狹的音域來表現出較廣闊的感覺，並說：「我必須唱得好像我自己
的心已碎的感覺，但仍在誇說我現在獨自生活多快樂。」
