http://business-times.asia1.com.sg/5/news/nfrnt07.html Jennie Chua named Woman of the Year 1999 Singer Kit Chan and 100-year-old social worker Teresa Hsu also honoured By Tan Su Yen [SINGAPORE] Capping a year during which she acquired a new figure and wardrobe, found a "soul mate" and was honoured as "Hotelier of the Year", Raffles International's Jennie Chua, 55, was last night named Her World's Woman of the Year 1999. Departing from tradition, Her World's awards, now in its ninth year, also honoured singer Kit Chan with the Young Woman Achiever Award. Ms Chan, who has carved out a successful singing career in Hongkong and Taiwan, is credited with paving the way for budding Singapore singers to make their mark in the regional Mandarin pop scene. Singapore's oldest and most widely circulated women's magazine also paid tribute to 100-year-old nurse and social worker Teresa Hsu with a one-off Special Award for her lifetime's work of administering to the poor, the aged and the sick. Looking back over her 30-year career in the hotel and travel industry, Ms Chua, president and chief operating officer, Raffles International Limited, part of the newly-listed Raffles Holdings, said: "My generation tended to take things as they came -- we went along with the changes and let things fall into place. If they didn't (fall into place), you tried to make them -- by your tenacity, if necessary." At 19, Ms Chua, now one of the highest-ranking woman executives in the global hotel industry, disrupted her tertiary education at the University of Singapore to help support her family -- she is the eldest among 12 children. She went back to university at 24, obtaining her degree from Cornell University at 26. Readily admitting that she is not a perfectionist, Ms Chua says her strongest point is her ability to make decisions quickly. "When you make fast decisions, the critical factor is that you are right 90 per cent of the time. You must have the ability to get rid of the white noise, and say 'what is the problem?', 'what is the opportunity?', and then move on very fast so you are ahead of the crowd." Despite her very public career, Ms Chua feels that her greatest achievement is in raising her two sons, Ken-Yi, 27, and Yang Peng, 22. "I take great pride in literally looking at the two boys and being able to say to the world that they are fine young men." At yesterday's press conference, it was the steadfast values of the ascetic Ms Hsu, who founded one of Singapore's first nursing homes, Home for the Aged Sick, that were inspiring for many, award-winners Ms Chua and Ms Chan included. When asked about her proudest achievement, the silver-haired Ms Hsu, who still visits the aged poor, said: "I don't think I have achieved anything. What I am doing now and what I have done for the last 66 years is to help less privileged people. For me, I am just doing a normal thing. "We are all fellow travellers on the road to eternity. If the person next to us is thirsty and needs water, I say: 'Have a drink'. " Her World magazine's Woman of the Year award honours women who make an outstanding contribution to society, in the process serving as a role model for other women. -- 批踢踢實業坊ptt.twbbs.org 等了又等●唯有陳潔儀KITCHAN版 中央情報局cia.twbbs.org.tw 永遠值得等了又等--陳潔儀KitChan版 Lonesome Dreamer Theatre 有你愛過Kit http://www.geocities.com/Tokyo/Garden/3562 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.twbbs.org) ◆ From: klar.fdorm1.nccu.edu.tw > -------------------------------------------------------------------------- < 作者: klar (想入飛飛) 看板: KITCHAN 標題: 海峽時報 Three women of substance 時間: Fri Mar 3 19:40:21 2000 http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/singapore/sin1_0303.html MAR 3, 2000 Three women of substance IT IS safe to say that singer Kit Chan has not often shared a stage with women like humanitarian Teresa Hsu and hotelier Jennie Chua. All three were in the spotlight at last night's Woman of the Year 1999 awards, organised by Her World magazine. Ms Chua, 55, president and chief operating officer of Raffles International Limited and general manager of the Raffles Hotel, was named Woman of the Year 1999 for achievements in the hotel and tourism industry that have done Singapore proud. Miss Teresa Hsu, 100, took the Special Award for her humanitarian work for the poor and aged sick. A nurse before, she has worked in London and helped to set up homes for the aged sick in Paraguay and Singapore. Homegrown star Kit Chan, 28, well-known not just here but also in Hongkong and Taiwan, was named the first Young Woman Achiever, a new award to be given out annually. It was started because Her World thought it was time younger women, the under-35s, got due recognition, said the chairman of the judging panel, Mr Robert Iau.
