Definitely NOT an Idiot's

A (Non)Fiction Kit
Her lucid eyes and confident demeanour radiate a form of
intelligence that can be quite intimidating. Especially to a rookie writer
like me. Drafting the interview questions was a headache. I hate to
sound like an idiot by asking her questions that had been asked to
death already.
Thank goodness that she was really patient and kind. Her
encouraging smiles and candour puts you at ease.
"Come let me see what questions you have got and I will help you as
much as I can." initiated Kit, sensing my nervousness.
"Oh, on my reading habits and my writing. It's not a problem,"
smiled Kit.
But again, what questions can possibly be too tough for our ex-RGS
student-turned singer-writer? None at all as she turns out to be quite
well-read and even dabbles at poetry writing. You'd probably know by
now that she released her own book of poems, Cork Out Of My Head
earlier this year, an "audacious and yet humorous retrospect" of her
glamorous life as a singer. Sounds like an autobiography of her life as a
singer.
"Oh no, the book certainly doesn't qualify as an autobiography of
my life. It will be ridiculous to think about even writing one because I
am not even thirty yet! When I do pen my autobiography, I will want
to talk more about other aspects of my life, other than my life as a
singer."
"Friends are very important to me. I can't imagine life without them.
If I am to highlight special stages in my life right now, I will definitely
accord special attention to my teenage years and that the friends that I
have made," said an enthused Kit. " I can still recall many funny events
and jokes we shared back then. You know, we tend to be goofy and
silly in our teenage years." Her crisp laughter hinted of an irrepressible
dimple on her flawless pink blushed cheeks. Was it the makeup or a
whimsical recollection of an embarrassing moment that prompted that
blush?
"Oh, there's a couple of love affairs or relationships which I will
want to bookmark in my life. It's always very heart-warming when I
look back at my past relationships, the movies I watched with my ex-
boyfriends, the places we went and so on. These memories come back
to me often whenever I do spring cleaning and find little gifts and stuff
I used to receive from them…you know," Sure I do. The nosy writer
here thereby took the hint to grant her wish to relish those sweet
romantic memories by herself.
Kit apparently does not like to harp on her status as a celebrity
despite her immense popularity and endearing public image. While she
acknowledged the sometimes-irresistible glamour factor attached to
being a celebrity, the free-spirited song-lark insisted that " A celebrity is
like any other normal person. I'd prefer down-to-earth things and
contribute my part to the world." That explains why she volunteered to
be the spokesman for the World Vision 30 Hour Famine Camp, which
will be held on the 16 and 17 June this year. This camp is part of a
series of activities organised to raise awareness of the existence of
poverty in Third World countries.
"Actually it was by fate that I got to know about this 30 Hour
Famine Camp organised by World Vision. I heard from a colleague
that World Vision was looking for a celebrity spokesman for event and
I was hoping my bit for the community at the same time."
" I am a strong believer of fate but I see fate being related to
relationships and circumstances more than anything else. Fate is not
the ultimate, it doesn't mean outcome." Like an author who engineers
the fate and destiny of the characters in his story, our chirpy ingenue
prefers to chart her own destiny, with occasional interference from fate
of course.
However dictating other people's fate and destiny sounds appealing
to Kit. Oh, of course not in real life but rather in the world of fiction.
" I would prefer to be a fiction writer where I can spin stories and
decide endings for the characters in my stories. There's also relatively
less homework to do as compared to non-fiction writing."
Fiction books are not just easier to write but easier to digest as well.
Currently Kit is reading a book called Explaining Hitler, which she
described as " disgustingly scholarly". But she is just going grit her
teeth to finish the book. A self-confessed book-lover, Kit reads both
fiction and non-fiction books and talked enthusiastically about some of
her favourite authors.
"In fact I enjoy reading those family sagas like those written by
Virginia Andrews. I love Isabel Allende's books for eg. The House of
The Spirits and Rice of the Earth. She is a good writer."
Busy, as she is, how does she find time to satisfy her cravings for
books?
" I read most often at night, before I sleep, in the toilet, and on the
plane. I usually read while I am travelling."
When asked if she has jumped on the virtual shopping bandwagon
to shop online, our modern gal gave a surprising answer, " Never. I am
a primitive person. I prefer doing things the old-fashioned way." I was
about to ask her if she owns a palm pilot, but then I guess not. Not
because she prefers doing things the old-fashioned way but because
her attentive agent would have seen to all her schedule and needs in
every way. Oh, I was just reminded that my precious fifteen minutes
with her is up.
