Who controls Kit?
Apr 27, 2001
KIT Chan had to be a bitch to get to where she is today.
She said: ''If being a bitch means being aggressively involved or
opinionated, then that's what I am."
She speaks from experience.
After all, in 1994, Kit was the first Singaporean to break into the
Taiwan market.
Since then, she has been a poet, stage actress, TV actress, a youth
ambassador and a World Vision worker.
"In the beginning, I didn't always do the best to boost my career.
"I can't tell you exactly what I didn't do, but some people told me
that I should go out more, to meet more people, to get more popular."
She didn't buy any of those advice.
"The fame thing? I'm willing to leave it!"
The 28-year-old is in control, although she admits she is willing to
give that up for the small things.
"There are some things I can't help, like doing stupid things on TV
but if you want to control everything, they'll think you're being anal."
Today, she is busy shaping herself up for her concert on June 9.
And from the looks of it, she is relinquishing control, handling the
reins over to her instructors.
The New Paper spent Wednesday with Kit, as she went through the rigours
of being a pop star.
Singing, dancing and toning up.
Here's what her day was like.
11am Dance class at Dance Circle Studio, Anchorpoint
KIT gives her body to dance instructor Eugene Delos Santos, 35.
She subjects her body to a series of twists, turns and twirls.
At 11.30am, Kit is massaging her lower back, face pinched.
She trys a move that involves gyrating her hips.
It isn't graceful. Kit is having problems with the gelek.
She says: "I'm not a dancer but I can move. But he's way too fast!"
Eugene, however, is encouraging: "As a dancer, she's promising. She's
open for learning, and that's important."
He is not saying what is Kit's weakest trait as a dancer. Instead,
he offers: "She has a great sense of humour... very childish, very
playful."
1.30pm Vocal lessons
COMPOSER/SINGER and all-round music vet Babes Condes is Kit's vocal
coach.
Kit confides, with a hint of pride in her voice: "When we first
approached Babes, she said 'Kit does not need singing lessons!'
"But I needed to train.
"You have to practise and practise, and I'm too lazy to do it on my
own!"
Kit takes a swig of liquid from her flask and explains: "I need my
pi pa kau (a gooey throat-soothing preparation)."
She warms up her throat by singing scales.
Quietly, I hum along too, taking advantage of a free vocal lesson
from the great Babes.
Kit climbs the scales comfortably.
She even does squats and stretches along the way.
This is routine to her.
Meanwhile, I am close to turning blue before I decide a free lesson
is not worth all the effort.
3pm Gym
KIT says she's not a jock.
In fact, going from a no-exercise mode to a full-blown workout regime
caused her to injure her hamstring once.
Kit declares: "I'm not sickly but just unfit. Back in school, I always
pretended to be sick during PE lessons."
But she's shaping up.
Personal trainer Janet Yeow, 27, says Kit is "a quick learner and hard
working".
And Kit has to be hard-working since she is not about to diet to stay
fit.
"I can't do without food! I'm not like the stars in Hongkong where
they'll starve themselves before a concert.
"My body type makes me tend to be plump but I'm lucky. I've got long
limbs, so I'm stretched.
"It's a visual thing."
