We have seen countless new artistes coming up with cover albums to announce their arrival in the music industry or to show the world their very own version of other people’s world-famous hits. But the bad thing about doing cover albums is that either you really do the songs justice, or you fail miserably and get labelled as a third-grade rip-off. Unfortunately for Khalil Fong, an American-born Chinese singer-songwriter, his album Timeless – which is his first ever English album, by the way – is smack right in the middle, which means it could potentially be bad or good depending on your expectations. As the name of the album suggests, Timeless features a collection of timeless classics such as Ray Charles’ ‘Georgia on My Mind’, Stevie Wonder’s ‘You Are the Sunshine of My Life’ and even the award-winning Audrey Hepburn evergreen classic ‘Moon River’. The good thing about this lad is that he has a pretty decent voice. We wouldn ’t exactly say that he has the exact soul-touching voice Michael Buble possesses, but it’s pretty good nonetheless. His rendition of George Benson’ s ‘Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love for You’ is a job well done, although we would really like it if he could put his personal spin on the song and not sound exactly like the original. What we didn’t really like about Khalil’s efforts is his tendency to turn fast, up-tempo songs into really slow songs. We can see, or rather, hear, that ballads are Khalil’s forte, but when you turn Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ and Richie Valen’s party anthem ‘La Bamba’ into make-out songs, you know you are going to get critics calling you up. While some might find his version refreshing, but supporters of the original version will find it not their cup of Earl Grey.(Earl Grey 即為俗稱的伯爵茶http://0rz.tw/LIiwW ) All in all, we think it’s just an OK album. But hey, it’s his debut English album so we are going to give him a break. As long as he does not turn any rock songs into ballads, we are fine. -- ◥ Duck tapes and T-shirts make the drums sound good. ◥ Khalil Fong -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.228.160.58
