Aug 30, 01: Michael Jackson Opened Nasdaq Stock Market Today In New York
At 9:30 AM ET today (Aug. 30), Michael Jackson presided over the Nasdaq market
opening ceremony in New York City. He appeared with Nasdaq officials a few
minutes prior to the opening bell, greeted by a large crowd of cheering fans
that gathered outside the Nasdaq MarketSite building, located on Time Square
on the corner of 43rd Street and Broadway. Many fans held signs, others
cameras. Jackson waved to fans numerous times during the event.
At precisely 9:30 AM, he rang to opening bell. When, moments later, Nasdaq
presented him with a birthday gift of a large, original poster from the
1930's of child star Shirley Temple, Jackson seemed surprised and moved.
A large birthday cake was wheeled out, while staffers sang the "Happy
Birthday" song to him. Jackson blew out the candles that adorned the cake,
a custom practiced in some parts of the world that is said to make birthday
wishes come true.
Michael Jackson, dressed in black, stayed for about 10 minutes in total and
could be seen touring a part of the Nasdaq headquarters, posing with staffers
for photos, including a woman holding a baby, eating his birthday cake,
talking to Nasdaq staffers, asking questions, and waving to fans. The entire
event was projected on large screens outside the Nasdaq building to the
enjoyment of fans, who craned their necks to get a glimpse of their idol.
The media was also limited to the outside of the building. Cable television
CNN broadcast the event live.
Vice Chairman of Nasdaq, Alfred R. Berkeley III, was present during today's
event. He is also one of the chairmen of the "Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary
Celebration, The Solo Years" events that will take place in New York on
September 7 and 10, 2001 at the Madison Square Garden. Berkeley will host a
dinner in Michael Jackson's honor following the September 7th concert.
