整個季末最夯的事情其實與籃球沒有太多關聯。在最後一戰前，就如本季我每場都會
做的一樣，我又和佛Talk了。試著發掘他腦海中的想法。和往常一樣，他有著極佳的洞察
力，也抱著樂觀態度來看這群年輕小伙子。
問：看著球隊現在的樣子，而且明年我們有大量的薪資空間以及另一隻樂透簽，你對於明
年繼續執教有多興奮，又認為球隊將會有什麼樣的成長。
佛：我真的很興奮。兩年前我接下工作時，大家都知道這隻球隊正在重建，當時的戰績也
是聯盟最囧。當時我們清楚知道我們不會花太多錢在自由球員上，所以首先要做的就
是明智的選秀，讓年輕球員好好發展，然後在搭配一些合理的交易來建構強壯的基礎
。我想以上就是我們做到的，下一步則是令人振奮的。我們只需要學習如何競爭、如
何贏得勝利，我認為我們正在這個階段。我們了解我們還有些拼圖需要再加進來，有
些則是需要成長強化。不過相較兩年前還不到位的地基，我們現在已經建成了。
問：這個工作有比你想像中困難嗎？
佛：不。如果沒有像Geoff Petrie、Wayne Cooper這些了解重建步驟的人坐在辦公室，或
著有一位喜歡指揮東、指揮西的老闆也許會造成不少麻煩。不過我們的老闆不會，他
們知道狀況是怎樣，他們希望無痛的過程，但他們也理解重建是怎樣，他們清楚這一
切起起伏伏，也總是有耐心和信心。球團相當支持我們，也和我們有誠實的溝通。這
兩年以來我們都是相當有持續性的發展。有以上這些後盾，沒有什麼是困難的。

問：這季開始我們有Here We Rise活動，我們也對Tyreke等年輕球員、Dalembert 等人都
有不小的期待，你會覺得我們一開始有些高估了嗎？
佛：這要看是誰在期許。我想沒有教練會希望有著高壓的工作環境（笑），但這正是競爭
激的 NBA樣貌。我們知道我們有什麼障礙要克服，開始是 Sam的受傷，然後是Tyreke
。我們知道DeMarcus有洋溢的天份，但也需要再加以培養。我想在交易和健康問題解
決後，我們看來是沿著正確的方向走的。
問：你今年最開心的是？某個球員或是團隊的發展？
佛：我想我們戰績在西區真的很糟，但我們的確比去年更好，對於球季即將結束會有點傷
心，因為我們正在正確的方向上，而這也是我最開心的一點。
問：那今年最遺憾的是？
佛：我們試著要在閃電來臨時捉住那道光，不過因為以上提及的原因而沒有做到。我們希
望讓自已成為季後賽的競逐者之一，卻沒有成功。
問：你有多希望回到球季的前兩個月？
佛：如果 Sam還是會受傷的話，如果還是有很多問題的話，我其實不怎樣想回去。（笑）

James Ham: With the lock-out pending, how important is it that the players
take this time and do the right thing for themselves during what could be an
elongated summer?
Coach Westphal: I don’t even want to comment on that (the lock-out), but in
general we don’t want to take a step backward and lose any momentum that we’
ve gathered with this team. It’s a young team and there is a lot of
improvement that needs to be made internally and the summer is the time to do
that. We will emphasize that in the largest possible degree that this is the
time to improve, that we haven’t done anything yet and if we don’t get
better over the summer, it’s going to be a long year. If we do get better,
and we should get better, we can have something special with this group.
A special thanks goes out to Coach Westphal, who throughout this season was
nothing short of amazing with the media. Whether it was in the practice
facility, on the floor during pre-game or via phone on the road, Coach always
took a few minutes to talk basketball and share his knowledge.
Basketball took a back seat to relocation talk the last month of the season,
which is a shame. The Kings finished a solid 9-9 over their last 18 games,
playing the role of spoiler all the way down the stretch. If their final
home game of the season was any barometer of things to come, the Kings erased
a 20-point deficit in the fourth quarter, taking a three point lead in the
waning moments before Kobe Bryant hit a game tying shot to force overtime.
Although the Kings lost to the Lakers in overtime, their tenacity and heart
was unmistakable. In a summer of uncertainty, both here in Sacramento and in
the NBA as a whole, the team looks poised to make a giant leap forward next
season. Hopefully it will be as the Sacramento Kings.
