Extra effort wins home opener

Kevin Martin hit the three-pointer on the left wing, then returned up the
Arco Arena floor once again.

It was the right kind of groundhog day for the Kings' shooting guard, yet
another possession in which the basket looked as big as the ocean and his
sharpshooting ways buoyed his team.

The late overtime shot put the Kings ahead by four points Monday night in
what became a 127-116 win over Memphis before an announced sellout crowd of
17,317 in their home opener.

And Martin, who played all but 34 seconds and finished with 48 points in 52
minutes, barely made it until the end.

get mad because they're playing … too much. It was an exhausting game. …

The Kings, who trailed by 14 in the first quarter, outscored the Grizzlies
17-6 in overtime, when reserve point guard Beno Udrih and reserve center
Spencer Hawes continued their sensational outings. Hawes had 21 points, 11
rebounds and seven assists in 44 minutes, but Westphal said his statistics
didn't matter nearly as much as his spirit.

Asked if Hawes had played his way into the starting lineup, Westphal sounded
as if it was a distinct possibility.

The Kings overcame a brutal night on the boards – Memphis outrebounded them
57-40 – and a combined 73 points from O.J. Mayo, Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph.

"That was a special experience for our team," Westphal said. "It was a true
team game, and it was a team game as far as the city is concerned, just to
have the place packed and cheering for a team that won 17 games the year

Udrih's fourth quarter was perhaps the best of his six-year career and
certainly his best as a King en route to a 16-point, six-assist outing. He
played the entire quarter while Tyreke Evans watched with a towel over his
head. The rookie, who sprained his right ankle at San Antonio on Saturday,
struggled for the third time in four games en route to a three-point night in
just 24 minutes.

for a runner; and a three-point play.

The Hawes-Udrih connection put the Kings in overtime. The center tracked his
point guard from the right post and threaded a two-handed bounce pass for a
running right-hander with one second left.
