Taking over a team that won just 17 games the previous season, Paul Westphal
knew he had his work cut out for him when he became Kings coach last June.
Ten months later, Westphal couldn't be more positive about his team or the
future after a 25-57 campaign. He believes he got the most out of the young,
rebuilding team, and his players never stopped playing hard.

are young pieces in place for a promising future. The Kings are under the
salary cap and again will have a high draft pick.

So there are plenty of positive vibes as the Kings enter the offseason, even
after finishing with the third-worst record in the NBA by losing 13 of their
final 15 games. Still, the team improved on the court and won eight more
games than it did in 2008-09.

Ownership liked the direction of the season so much that Westphal had the
option on his contract for 2011-12 picked up this week.
The Kings of last season weren't competitive down the stretch, when they lost
11 of 14. But these Kings fought to the end, a sign the culture of the team
has begun to shift away from the losing mentality.

The Kings began the season as one of the biggest surprises in the NBA.
In December, the Kings were 13-14 after their franchise-best 35-point
comeback in Chicago. Just four wins away from tying the win total from the
previous season, there were whispers of a playoff run in the ultracompetitive
Western Conference.
The Kings did this with Martin, the team's leading scorer, playing just five
games before he was sidelined because of a broken left wrist.

That left Evans to carry the load, and he was named Western Conference Rookie

But after the miracle in Chicago, reality began to hit in the form of the
schedule. The Kings began playing elite teams, and losses began to pile up.

Martin returned Jan. 15, but that didn't stop the losing. The Kings were 3-14
after Martin returned, and it was obvious he didn't fit in with the team's
young players, who gained confidence without him.
Martin was traded to Houston in a three-team deal that also involved New
York, and brought Landry to Sacramento.

The next step in rebuilding is to continue to improve defensively and at
closing games. The Kings went from 30th to 20th in opponents' field-goal
percentage and from 29th to 10th in rebounds per game.

The Kings struggled in late-game situations much of the season. There were
times when Evans was able to win games, but other times the offense stalled
or defensive breakdowns allowed the opposition to win.
"We've just got to get better with closing the close games down," guard Beno
Udrih said. "Hopefully, we've learned something this year for next year and
we can win a couple more games."
