It was a worthy goal.

Beno Udrih was the new point guard early last season, a savior of sorts
considering the Kings had no other legitimate options. Mike Bibby was
injured, and the team's hopes seemed to take the seat next to him on the
bench.

So Udrih, a career backup who was about to be given his first real chance to
shine in his fourth year, set the bar quite high for himself.

"I should be getting seven assists per game on my own," he said.

But 14 months later, that is not the case.

While Udrih was given a five-year, $32.3 million contract over the summer, he
also has learned the hard way that the point guard's role is quite different
in Sacramento. This is the land of the high-post offense as long as Brad
Miller remains, with the 7-footer often dubbed a "center-point" directing
traffic and finding open teammates "80 percent of the time," Reggie Theus
estimated.

That and Udrih's often questionable decision-making this season, and injuries
that often have surrounded him with inexperienced youngsters, has led to an
underwhelming payoff on his new deal. Entering tonight's game at the Lakers,
he ranks 18th among the league's point guards in assists per game at 5.2.

But the rub to those paying his salary is more about turnovers, with Udrih's
66 second among point guards to Phoenix's Steve Nash entering Thursday (tied
for seventh overall) and his three per game putting him third at his position
behind Nash (3.7) and Dallas' Jason Kidd (3.1). By comparison, Bibby averaged
more than 5.4 assists per game just once (6.8 in 2004-05) in his six full
seasons in Sacramento while averaging 2.35 turnovers.

Udrih is well aware of the inherent conflict playing in this system. Whereas
Bibby was content with what often amounted to a scoring role, Udrih sometimes
yearns to run the show. Yet it rarely has happened. The rare example came
Nov. 12, when he scored a career-high 30 points and had seven assists in a
win over the Los Angeles Clippers. The production came mostly out of the
pick-and-roll sets he wishes were called more frequently.

也會這樣。但是已經很少發生。譬如和快艇打的那場他得了30分還有7次助攻。大部分的表
現都是因為PNR，所以他希望常常PNR。

"I come across the middle, and I have to pass the ball," Udrih said recently.
"Brad has the ball in the high post. There's a lot of (corner) action. …
 Sometimes it's hard to get assists up. I mean, every time I do have the ball
and I handle it in pick-and-rolls, I do have a lot of assists."
「我穿越中央，而且我必須傳球，大米在高位拿著球，角落有很多動作，有時候真的很難
讓助攻提高，我的意思是，每一次我拿到球而且PNR，我能夠有很多助攻」。

Theus said his approach to the pick-and-roll is simple.

"If the pick-and-roll is going well, I'll run it every single time," he said.
"It's on (Udrih). If it's working, I'll run it the whole game. I'll put Brad
on the corner and have Beno there, and he can do his best imitation of
(Utah's) Deron Williams and (New Orleans') Chris Paul.
「如果能將PNR運用得好，我每次都會用，這決定於BENO，假設這管用，整場比賽都會用它
我會將大米和BENO放在同一邊，他可以儘量去模仿Deron和CP3」

"I think that's a great way to play. When you can surround those guys with
shooters, they either score or find the open guy."

Health should only help the situation. With Francisco García back from his
right calf strain, Udrih has a spot-up shooter to find for open looks. With
Kevin Martin's second return from his left ankle injury looking to be at
least a week away, his eventual return will give Udrih another worthy weapon.

Theus said Udrih must not forget the importance of passing the ball up the
floor on fast breaks as well, with the up-tempo game a surefire way to
keeping him involved.

"I still think he's got to get better at finding the open guy," Theus said.
"He's got to get better at getting it out and going. That's just something
that he has got to develop on his own. There are no drills for that. There's
no system."
