The Kings made a minor move today, finalizing a deal that sends a 2015
second-round pick to Boston and brings back veteran point guard Sam Cassell
and cash considerations.

According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the Kings - who
announced the deal this morning - receive approximately $500,000 in the deal
that will more than offset the remaining cost of Cassell's expiring contract
($1.2 million this season).

While Kings basketball president wouldn't discuss the figures, he
acknowledged that the move was financially-driven.

"This was an economic move," Petrie told The Bee's Ailene Voisin. "We got
some cash considerations and took his contract." Because Cassell is playing
on a one-year veteran's minimum contract, the NBA - per the league's
collective bargaining agreement - is paying for $797,581 of his salary. And
since the remaining balance owed by the Kings to that point is $158,676, it
is believed they will net approximately $340,000 in the deal.

While numerous sources indicate the Kings will waive the 16-year veteran,
they have a roster spot available if they opted to keep him in Sacramento.
While he hasn't played this season and played in just 17 games last season,
the three-time NBA champion had been playing an unofficial coaching role of
sorts in Boston and could do the same for the wayward Kings. Petrie said he
wasn't yet sure if Cassell would be joining the Kings.

"We're trying to reach him," he said. "He's certainly welcome to come.
