An important rendezvous awaits the Sacramento Kings and the National
Basketball Association two weeks from today on the grounds of Cal Expo.

That's when state officials and an NBA-controlled corporation unveil a
long-awaited plan for a major development project at Cal Expo, focused on a
state-of-the-art arena for the Kings.

Amid those pressures, Cal Expo and NBA officials say they are pushing to have
a detailed development plan ready to present to the Cal Expo board, the Kings

rises in Sacramento over the team's future.

During a brief phone conversation Thursday, Kings co-owner Joe Maloof brushed
aside the question of whether the Kings might move, saying he is focused on
what the report from Cal Expo and the NBA will show.

Joe Maloof declined to say whether team representatives have talked with
other cities recently or whether the Kings are considering filing a

"I don't want to talk about that speculation," he said. "Right now, we are
focused on trying to work on something with Sacramento.

NBA official Joel Litvin also expressed the league's desire to solidify the
Kings' future here by getting them out of antiquated Arco and into a new

The NBA stepped in two years ago to lead an arena effort after Sacramento

right now.

Schwarzenegger and Cal Expo officials in support of a new arena.

participants agree the Cal Expo arena effort faces added hurdles.

Sean Walsh of Bingham Consulting Group, which represents the state in
negotiations with the NBA and includes former Gov. Pete Wilson, acknowledged
edginess as the dual deadlines approach.

He said he hopes everyone stays focused.

"We are getting close to being able to present some options that we believe
could be workable for an arena and a fair site," he said. "That process is
close. Let us see this through."
