With Vlade Divac's jersey retirement scheduled during halftime of tonight's
Kings-Hornets game at Arco Arena, this seemed like the ideal time to spin out
a CD of the former center's top-10 hits.

This is totally subjective, of course. I choose the music.
Going back two decades, to Divac's 1989 NBA rookie season, and in no
particular order …

1. Let's start with the underwear. While the Kings were defeating the Utah
Jazz in the 2002 playoffs at what was then known as the Delta Center, Divac
and his teammates cracked up over a sign that read, "Vlade Divac wears
women's underwear." After practice the following day, I asked if it was true.
"During the game I checked to be sure," he began, with a grin. "I don't wear
underwears anyway. Men's, women's, no. But I liked that sign the best."

2. Jan. 22, 1999. This was the day Divac became the first significant free
agent to spurn other offers and sign with the Kings. As a caller pointed out
Saturday, Sacramento isn't a cowtown. You can't even find a cow within the
city limits. Yet it took a talented 7-footer to say "yes" for local residents
to at least consider overcoming their inferiority complex. Sacramento isn't
the Bay Area. But it's OK, it really is.

3. My first conversation with this loquacious center, sometime in 1989, in
the Lakers' locker room in the Forum. I asked a question. He smiled and
nodded. I asked another question. He smiled again and nodded. That's when I
figured out that he spoke absolutely no English. It didn't take long.

4. Divac's final performance in international competition. In the gold-medal
game against Argentina in the 2002 FIBA World Championships in Indianapolis –
 after his team had eliminated Team USA in the quarterfinals – Serbia's
basketball icon missed two free throws that would have clinched the
championship. Sound familiar? (This was only months after Divac clanked two
against the Lakers.) But on this night, with chanting, singing and
flag-waving Serbs waiting to celebrate inside Conseco Fieldhouse, he was
rescued by Peja Stojakovic and former Kings draft pick Dejan Bodiroga in
overtime.

5. The bruising aftermath of the Game 7 conference finals loss to the Lakers
in 2002. Divac was the only member of the Kings organization to meet with
reporters during the scheduled media availability the following Monday.

6. His refusal to whine about being minimized when a visibly limping Chris
Webber returned to the starting lineup following knee surgery in March 2004.
At the time, the Kings owned the league's best record and were on pace to
demolish league records for assists by a forward/center combination (Divac
and Brad Miller). Of course, that was also why he retired with the Lakers.
Even Vlade has an ego.

6. Who writes his copy? After eviscerating the San Antonio Spurs with nine
assists on Jan. 29, 2004, Divac volunteered, "When I make passes, sometimes
the ball has eyes. It's all instinct."

7. Missing the long flip shot at the end of Game 5 of the 1999 playoff loss
to Utah, then swallowing hard and nodding when a 10-year-old approached a few
days later and said, "Geez, Vlade, you should have made that shot."

8. Any flop against Shaq. The exaggerated flailing of arms and limbs. The
mouth wide open in protest. The eyes feigning ferocity while staring down the
refs. Great theater, all of it.

9. This one is an abbreviated sequence of Divac's finest passes, beginning
and ending with my all-time favorite. The back-to-the-basket, bounce pass
between his legs to Doug Christie, cutting baseline for a layup.

10. We'll conclude with a humorous aside from NBA Commissioner David Stern,
who earlier in a conversation had spoken glowingly of his former star and his
global impact on the game. "Before Vlade came over with those four players
(in the seminal Class of 1989), there was the old image of the European
player who had no muscle and used to light up a cigarette at halftime. Vlade
put an end to that. (Pause.) He waited until after the game to light up, and
he knew what a weight room was."
