There was no grace period, no time to mull over the reality of being a
retired athlete and slowly transition into life as an NBA coach.
沒有優雅的結束，沒有時間讓你慢慢從退休的運動員轉變成NBA教練。

There was the Sept. 23 announcement that Shareef Abdur-Rahim's problematic
right knee would end his 12-year career, and the immediate decision that he
would join the Kings' coaching staff. The culture shock of being a coach was
an adjustment for Abdur-Rahim on its own, but changing sides on the team for
which he had just played for the past three seasons made it even more unique.

And so it surprised no one that there would be a professional identity
crisis, one that eventually cleared up early in training camp. Former
teammate Francisco García and longtime colleague Bobby Jackson were talking
to him like he was still one of their own during a training session, and
Abdur-Rahim decided it just had to be different if this was going to work.

When Abdur-Rahim's new life with the Kings began, he was simply thrilled they
would take him at all.

His retirement could be seen coming for some time, with two arthroscopic
surgeries in a six-month span leading up to it, and anyone who saw him with
mountains of ice on both his knees so often knew he wouldn't likely return to
the floor. But the pain wasn't merely physical. Abdur-Rahim agonized about
the fact that he would fulfill just three years of his five-year contract
with the Kings – two of those in which he was productive.

If he was to retire because of injury, he was hoping that his post-playing

"When I told (Jabri) that I wasn't playing anymore, he took it the hardest
out of everybody," said Abdur-Rahim, who also has a daughter, Samiyah. "It
crushed him. He took it so hard. Harder than me, probably. It crushed him.

"The (good news) was, 'Well, I'm going to be a coach, so we can still go to
the games and we can still be with the Kings.' That was the silver lining."

Abdur-Rahim's main responsibility is to work with the team's young big men.
He spends extra time before and after practices with second-year center
Spencer Hawes and rookie forward Jason Thompson, sharing the post moves and
insight that helped him average 18.1 points and 7.5 rebounds in his career.

But as the season has grown longer, so has his to-do list. He has become a
poor man's Todd Purves, the Kings' video coordinator who – with assistant

technical art of splicing video of individual player performances for
training purposes. And while his role is more specialized than the rest of
the coaching staff, Abdur-Rahim takes part in all of the coach's planning
meetings.

"When we're talking defensive strategies and offensive things, I like him to

think?' And then (have him) share his insight. That's his growth as a coach,
and I'm trying to give him a voice and we're all in this thing together.

then he's translating that to those guys. It's big."

Abdur-Rahim has gravitated to Brown more than the other assistants in part
because of their similar stories. When Brown's 12-year career came to an end
in Chicago, he joined the coaching staff of then-Bulls coach Scott Skiles.
But Brown said he wasn't ready for the transition from player to assistant
coach, and he resigned less than a month into the switch. It was a
regrettable moment for Brown, who aspires to become a head coach one day.

told him it was going to be a tough transition for him. The hours are
different. You can no longer think like a player. You 100 percent have to
think like a coach and can't think like a player anymore … .

time, he has earned that from the guys."

Although Abdur-Rahim said he wants to remain in the NBA in some capacity,
he's unsure if he will pursue a coaching job next season. But at least for
now he finally feels like a coach. Even if he continues to get ribbed.

Veterans from opposing teams do double-takes when they see Abdur-Rahim on the
Kings' bench, surprised to learn that he has joined the coaching ranks. And
considering his player salary of $12.8 million combined for this season and
next was covered by insurance because of his injuries and he is also being
paid a one-year coaching deal, his coaching colleagues like to point out that
he could be the highest-paid assistant in league history.

It's not former teammates poking fun at him, though, and so Abdur-Rahim's
standing in the coaching ranks remains.

"I don't in any way think I've got it figured out or that I know more than
the coaches or anyone else," Abdur-Rahim said. "It's really a learning
process for me. I'm thankful for the chance to learn. The season hasn't been
so great. But from my perspective, as far as coaches, I couldn't ask to have
a better bunch of guys to be around and learn from."
