Hawes and Thompson have been working harder than ever recently, quietly and
routinely the last off the court after practices while embracing the coaching
and life lessons of Carril and assistant coach Shareef Abdur-Rahim. And sure
enough, it's getting easier every day.

At a time when the fan base continues to be frustrated and the most frequent
complaint is that the organization lacks direction, the Kings' recent flurry

include Thompson – was also a subtle statement of support.

a consultant in early January, he expressed disappointment with the state of
affairs and shared doubts about his ability to help the Kings' cause. But if
the post-practice routine among Carril, Abdur-Rahim, Hawes and Thompson is
any indication, "Coachie" has been re-energized by the daily task of
developing the Kings' young frontcourt.

The focus of their sessions is simple, with Carril and Abdur-Rahim determined
to turn Hawes and Thompson into the versatile high-post wizards that Miller
and Vlade Divac were before them. They work in the post, refining moves that
will give the Kings a much-needed inside game. They work on the perimeter,
where Carril implores Hawes to quiet his three-point critics by making his
outside looks in well-timed fashion and Thompson hones his skills as a
midrange specialist. Most importantly, though, they work to improve as
facilitators, combining their naturally unselfish ways with passing skills
that are so vital in Carril's Princeton offense the Kings now run.

Meanwhile, Carril is pleading with Hawes and Thompson to brush up on their
NBA history and learn from some of the greatest big men of all time.

"There's an art to playing center, and there are two centers in this league,"
Carril said. "I've told them to imitate (San Antonio's Tim) Duncan, because
right now he's the best all-around center we have. We have (Phoenix's) Shaq

game like (Bill) Russell or any of those guys, imitate them. And I think
that's what they're doing."

Carril was hesitant to discuss Hawes and Thompson because of his belief
Abdur-Rahim deserves the credit. The former Kings forward, Carril said, has
been vital in the process as a teacher of the game and communicative
facilitator.
Coachie過去還在猶豫是否要討論Hawes和小湯，因為他認為應該由SAR來說。他認為SAR已
經是名非常重要的人，不論是身為老師還是教練。
