Natt takes hard line on Kings' soft play

With 20 games left, Kings coach Kenny Natt is taking the hard line with his
team.

The message after Thursday's practice: Not going hard will earn a trip to

the soft chairs next to him on the bench.


"From my standpoint, what I need to do is pull guys out of the game that

don't want to play," said Natt, whose team's 117-109 loss to Indiana on

Tuesday was its 19th defeat in the last 22 games. "Guys who don't play

with effort, that's who I'll start pulling out of the game. I've made it

very clear to them that that's where we're going from now on."


Natt, who has spent much of his tenure juggling the desire to win with the

realities of rebuilding and developing young players, said he must take a

more "black and white" approach.


"Even in a developing situation, you can't stay in a basketball game if

(they're) not going to play," Natt said. "If you think that you're going

to stay in the game (without playing hard), you're going to be sitting over

there with me. That's what they have to understand."


Natt's morning with his team began with a film session. Some of the clips,

Natt said, showed "how bad, how awful, how horrible (the Kings) were

defensively." Others, he added, showed "how good (the Kings) were."


The next question, however, is how much different the film from Sunday's

game against Denver will look. Natt, who isn't holding practice for the

second day in three days today, said he would spend much of this rare break

in the schedule contemplating a lineup change.


"We have another couple of days here, and we'll see what happens with our

lineup when we start on Sunday," he said. "This is an opportunity for guys

to continue to work hard. We'll find out which guys are willing to work hard

and listen and play within the system."


When it comes to Bobby Jackson, it's no secret that he intends to be a coach

when his playing days are over. And while the Kings guard said he found

Natt's stance refreshing, he's not confident it will make a difference.


"It's good to hear him say that," Jackson said. "Hopefully guys will start to

turn around these last 19, 20-something games we've got. But it's been going

this way all year, so I don't see anything changing. … All the games we've

been playing in, it's been like that all year. He's going to have to do that

if he wants to make a change."


Jackson did, however, like the idea of taking the hard line of a different

kind.


"If we start fouling hard and limit all the layups and dunks and stuff like

that, we'd be a pretty good team," he added. "But if we keep giving up all the

layups we did against Indiana, the game will be a totally different game.

"The proof is in the pudding. It's like I told the guys after the game, 'We

ain't fooling ourselves. People see who's playing hard, and people see who

ain't playing hard.' "


The ultimate example of an unlikely benching, of course, would be one involving

Kings shooting guard Kevin Martin. While he is the team's leading scorer at

24.1 points per game, he is also routinely the player targeted in opposing

team's scouting reports as a weak defender.


"As a player, you go by (Natt's) rules," he said when asked about the coach's

new stance. "So you're not going to play if you don't play 'D.' I agree with

him."


The question of which injured Kings will be available to play remains in doubt,

as point guard Beno Udrih remains day-to-day with a sprained right foot. Kings

swingman Francisco Garcia practiced after suffering a non-displaced fracture on

his right ring finger against Indiana and likely will play Sunday.
