[外電] Kings' Natt faces important stretch for job status

Kenny Natt has no shortage of fans in Salt Lake City, where he spent nine
seasons as a Utah assistant and resident disciple under Jazz head coach Jerry
Sloan.
Natt在鹽湖城有滿多粉絲，因為他曾在猶他待了九季。

So when the Kings' coach and his team visited Utah on Saturday, the popular
query about the popular man concerned his future in his current position. The
question of whether Natt returns next season, however, does not yet have an
answer.
所以當他帶領球隊到猶他時，很多人關心他下一球季會不會回到猶他，但還沒有答案。

While the Kings have gone 7-30 under Natt since he took over Dec. 15, the
coming weeks could be crucial to his chances of earning at least one more
season. And with a light schedule ahead that includes just three games in 10
days after Saturday's loss to the Jazz, Natt has a chance to make the most of
practice time he badly needs and further implement his system and his ways.

"The things the Jazz are doing … they did them in training camp," Natt said
Saturday. "The things I talked about when I took over this team, those are
the type of things you have to really grind in practice. If you want to be a
good defensive team, you have to grind, you have to go back to the basics:
the basics of defense, the basics of offense, and really grind those things
in (two-a-day) practice situations.

"It's tough to do that (at midseason) and really take a team over and try to
get the guys to just compete hard and instill more discipline in them. It's
been a tough chore."

As Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie confirmed in late January, Natt
already has agreed to a one-year deal for just under $2 million that the
organization must pick up by May 1 if it chooses that direction.

Sources close to the team say the Kings long ago began internal discussions
about potential coaching candidates beyond Natt. A coaching search likely
would include familiar names, among them former Washington and Kings coach
Eddie Jordan, former Detroit and Minnesota coach Flip Saunders and Boston
assistant Tom Thibodeau. There could, of course, be additional candidates if
there are more NBA firings before the summer.

While Petrie has been determined to give Natt a legitimate chance to
establish himself as a viable candidate, the interim coach also could have a
significant economic advantage. In light of the team's ongoing financial
struggles and growing concern from Kings co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof about
the battered and bruised bottom line, Natt likely would be the cheapest
option as cost-cutting continues.
當Petrie已經決定給Natt一個機會證明自己，對Natt在經濟上也有幫助。隨著球隊財政的

Money matters, part of a league-wide trend to improve those battered bottom
lines, continue to dictate much of the team's operations. The buyout of
forward Drew Gooden on Sunday was the latest example, as sources with
knowledge of the situation indicated it saved the Kings approximately $2
million. And while the Kings already had made significant cutbacks on travel
costs, there have been more changes recently. They are now traveling with one
member of the security team instead of two and with one video coordinator
instead of two, and they have been staying in cheaper hotels than in the past.

The Kings unexpectedly have cut payroll with the abrupt resignation of
assistant director of scouting Jack Mai in January. What's more, it appears
they'll even be saving money on the travel costs of one of their players.

Seldom-used forward Kenny Thomas did not make the trip to Utah and – barring
injuries or roster changes that might necessitate his services – is not
expected to travel with the team for the rest of the season.

After tonight's game against Indiana, Natt's team has two games in the next
seven days and plenty of practice time to make his mark. And while the issue
of saving money will remain front and center, the Kings' coach simply hopes
to save his job.
在對完溜馬後，未來7天只有兩場比賽。在這種時機下，教練只想要保住他的飯碗。
