Near the end of Friday night's rare Kings victory – after the frequent
booing and the man yelling "Fourteen wins!" in reference to Sacramento's win
total – only Anthony Anderson could bring an arena full of frustrated New
York Knicks fans to smile.
The heavyset actor/comedian jumped up from his courtside seat during a late
fourth-quarter timeout and unleashed a spirited Michael Jackson impression as
the song "Thriller" played. He sparked laughter with his leg kick, then
amazement when he pulled off the thighs-to-the-floor splits that had the
Kings laughing harder than anyone at Madison Square Garden.
It was quite a different scene than the last time the teams had met, when it
was the Knicks running the Kings off their home floor on Dec. 14 and
then-coach Reggie Theus being run out of town the next day. And if Kenny Natt
has his way, the fate of the incumbent head coach will also be different.
While the Kings have until May 1 to decide whether to keep Natt for next
season, the process of evaluating him remains a day-to-day affair. He is in
the midst of a late-season tryout for the job, his chances seeming slim but
the possibility of his return not yet ruled out.

Natt – who has already signed a one-year agreement that would pay him $1.8
million for next season if the team picks up his option by the May 1 deadline
– hopes to be around when the good times become more frequent. And although
the team is only 9-36 since he took over, Natt said he has done enough to
warrant a second look.

"I think I've done everything management has asked me to do," Natt said
before the Kings routed the Knicks 121-94 on Friday. "Obviously we would love

professionals in this league, playing the right way, just instilling a lot of
the things I've learned along the way as an assistant coach. …

An unofficial poll of four of the Kings' core players – Kevin Martin,
Francisco García, Spencer Hawes and Beno Udrih – showed support for Natt.
Martin and García called for Natt's rehiring, while Hawes and Udrih
expressed their approval of the job Natt has done but said it was
"management's decision" whether to bring him back.

Martin called Natt "a great coach." García – perhaps the player with the
most to lose when Theus was fired because of their shared history – said he
and Natt have "a great relationship" and "I hope he sticks around."

Hawes, who saw his playing time and progress diminish soon after Natt took
over, said they had "gotten past that" and that Natt had "given Jason

Udrih, who began by saying, "every person in (the Kings' locker room) has
positives and negatives," cited Natt's nine seasons as an assistant in Utah
and Cleveland as a positive and said, "He's learning what certain players can

playing. … We just have to stick together and listen and keep learning,
learning and getting better. That's our goal, for next year especially."
The players, as Martin pointed out, have been the ones playing so poorly for
so long.
"At some point, it's on us players, because we've had three different coaches
in the past three years and the same results," Martin said. "You have a
veteran guy like Kenny, who has been in the Finals (as an assistant with
Cleveland) and everything. I think he's a great fit."

In different economic times, Natt would likely be on his way out if only
because of pressure from the team's fan base. Having suffered through the
post-Rick Adelman coaching carousel of Eric Musselman, Reggie Theus and now
Natt, passionate Kings fans plead for a big-name coach to stop the spinning.

Former Kings coach Eddie Jordan is among the potential candidates, if Natt is
released. After being fired by the Wizards early this season, Jordan is owed
$4 million for next season and thus could come on the relative cheap for the
2009-10 campaign.

Hypothetically, Jordan could receive $2 million from the Kings that would
offset just half of his Washington salary and put him in the same pay
neighborhood as before. But coaches of Jordan's ilk would likely be seeking
at least a three-year commitment, meaning his remaining years would come
solely from the Kings.

During a 10-minute pre-game interview, Natt referenced the roster and made
the candid point that "personnel means a lot in this league."
Natt knows the team's personnel will improve in the future; he just hopes to
be here to enjoy it.
"I've been in this situation before," he said. "Look at the Jazz (and
21st-year coach Jerry Sloan). You stay with it, make the right changes, right
personnel, add to the team, and teams come around again. The final decision
is up to (Kings management).
"Personally, with the little sleep that I do get after having to endure what
I've endured, I know that I'm doing the best job I can under the
circumstances."
