Doug Christie wasn't at Oracle Arena on Wednesday night, but he may have been
watching.

The former Kings guard does plenty of that these days, taking in as many NBA
games as possible as part of his new career as a basketball trainer and
developmental coach. And while he surely would have been pleased to see Kevin
Martin's career-high 50 points in the Kings' 143-141 overtime loss to Golden
State, he almost certainly would be left wanting more.

When the discussion of Martin and his potential to be more of an all-around
player is raised, Christie's name is usually not far behind. While Christie
was nowhere near the scorer Martin is during his 15 seasons, his dedication
to defense and unbridled passion often propelled the Kings during his five
seasons in Sacramento.

Martin has always maintained that Christie is on his short list of
early-career influences, as the two players spent 31 games together during
Martin's rookie season in 2004-05 before Christie was traded to Orlando for
Cuttino Mobley.

Christie, who retired in 2007 while with the Clippers, opened the Christie
Sports Management/Athlete Training Firm this month. It's based in Seattle

"I saw (Martin's) dad last time I was (at Arco Arena), and I said, 'Anytime

Martin was anything but happy after the Kings maintained their hold on the
league's worst record. For the second consecutive night, he struggled in the
fourth quarter of a tight game. While he had just one point against New
Orleans on Tuesday night, he had 11 against the Warriors in the fourth
quarter but went 7:35 without scoring before hitting a layup and two free
throws in the final 11 seconds.

It was the late miscues, more than anything, that showed there remains room
for improvement. With two minutes left in regulation, he traveled on a
pull-up three-point attempt, then traveled again with 54 seconds left and the
Kings down 128-124.

While a Martin three-pointer early in overtime brought the Kings within one,
it would be his only field goal of the extra session. He missed a three with

142-141.

Martin said of scoring 50 points, "It would have felt better if we would have

In hitting 23 of 26 free throws, Martin broke his Sacramento-era record for
free throws made (22) and attempted (24) while tying the franchise records by
Nate Archibald and Oscar Robertson, respectively.
