Before leaving for a two-game trip to Memphis and Houston earlier this month,
Kings shooting guard Kevin Martin was asked about his relationship with
first-year coach Reggie Theus.

"Everybody's going to have differences, but we're fine now," Martin said in
the days leading up to the All-Star break. "I feel like this is probably the
best our relationship has been. It's just going to come with time, with him

The Kings' 123-117 loss in Atlanta on Wednesday was more than just the latest
defeat in a three-game slide that dropped them five games below .500 and 8
1/2 games out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
It was the latest night of struggles in what has been a trying month for
Martin, whose production has gone down while his frustration level has gone
up.

He played a season-low 22 minutes, clarifying later that he told the coaching
staff he was content to sit the entire second quarter since the bench players

halftime. But when he was taken out midway through the fourth quarter, the
typically quiet Martin voiced his opinion to Theus near the bench. He didn't
return until there were 59 seconds left and the Kings' seven-point deficit
meant Theus needed his long-range shooters on the floor.

assists (five) late in the third quarter, he sat for a stretch of nearly 6
1/2 minutes as the Kings' deficit grew from seven points to 19. Martin didn't
score another point and finished with 31 minutes.

previous games.

‧ The Kings' record – 4-7.
And Martin, as evident to all who have watched, has certainly not looked like
himself.
"I should be frustrated," Martin said. "I was talking to somebody before the
game, saying how maybe some adversity is good for me. I haven't really had
any since I became a starter (in December 2005). Maybe I need to go through a
tough stretch like this.

Martin returned from a groin injury at the end of January and seemed to have
put his days of occasionally disappearing from the offense behind him. He had
even grown more vocal about the importance of his role, taking a candid
approach for which he's not known.

Not long after, Theus made it clear that the offense would run through Ron
Artest, then followed through with his new message on the floor. Although

and has taken over the team lead for the season (15.8 shots per game). He has
shot at a 47-percent clip in February, averaging 22.4 points per game.

(points). Something's wrong. Every three or four games, he should be getting
