Mark Kreidler: Kidd for Bibby and Hedo? Nah

Well, hi, and welcome to the Rain On Your Parade Hotline. Today's
conversational downer: The trade that isn't.
Mike Bibby is not being packaged with Hedo Turkoglu and sent to
the New Jersey Nets. Jason Kidd, and the NBA championship rings
that (now that I mention it) aren't actually on his fingers, are
not coming to Sacramento in a sign-and-trade free-agency special.
This is a rumor with legs and some logic behind it. It makes sense
on a couple of fronts. There is plenty to be said on all sides of
the argument.
It just isn't happening, is all.
By the time I got to Geoff Petrie on Wednesday, the Kidd rumor
had bounced around the Kings' Natomas offices a few dozen times,
shot through a phone line or three and finally attached itself
to the desk of the team's president of basketball operations.
"It's another one of those things that sort of gurgles up from
the basketball Babylon," Petrie said with a shrug -- and trust
me, Petrie is the kind of man who can phrase his words in such
a way that you can hear him shrug over the phone.
Still, this gurgling babble had enough volume to it that Petrie
said he would specifically track down Bibby to let the guard know
it was baloney. That alone attests to the facts that (1) Petrie
doesn't particularly believe in creative tension, and (2) the non
-trade is at least grounded in a reality.
Kidd's future with the Nets is indeed uncertain. If he ultimately
decides he won't return to New Jersey under any circumstances,
the franchise's best option is to sign him to a mega-deal that it
already knows another team is willing to accept -- in this rumor's
case, the Kings, who could neutralize most of Kidd's projected $12
million salary by sending the Nets both Bibby and Turkoglu.
The Kings get a guard of superior standing. The Nets get two good
young players and make the best of a lousy situation. Or, depending
upon your view, the Kings give away two potential keys to their
future for a 30-year-old guard who doesn't even answer their most
pressing need on the court.

It's a great conversation piece. Alas, it has a scant chance of
growing much beyond that.
First, according to Petrie, the teams have never discussed such a
deal in any facet, and Petrie has no inclination to do so. Second,
despite the chatter around Kidd, the strongest possible result of
his free agency is his remaining in the greater New York
metropolitan area, playing for the Nets, making a fortune, competing
for NBA titles and facilitating his wife's budding television career
all at the same time.

Beyond that, says a Western Conference executive, "My guess is
that New Jersey could do better (than Bibby and Turkoglu) if it
came to a sign-and-trade situation, once the word got around the
league that Kidd was available. You'd see some great offers."
All true. But the most interesting reasons, from the Kings'
standpoint, lie in the thought processes that surround Bibby and,
to a noteworthy extent, Turkoglu.
Statistically, Bibby was better this season than he was the
season before, despite missing 27 games because of a broken
bone in his foot. He was decent in the first round of the
playoffs before falling off the table against Dallas, a slump
that was made more pronounced by the fact that in the Mavericks
series a year ago, Bibby appeared to jump up to a new plateau
of performance.

Those close to Bibby say he was stung by the critical reviews of

deep into the night on the eve of Game 5 against Dallas
celebrating his 25th birthday. (Bibby laid an egg in that ensuing
112-93 loss, but, in fairness, so did hall the Kings roster.)

Wherever the truth lies there, it's clear that Bibby is motivated;
he and Bobby Jackson have been fixtures at the Kings' practice
facility since the season ended. Moreover, it's clear that Petrie
believes in Bibby's future.
Petrie sees a steadily improving player. He values Bibby's ease
of operation alongside Chris Webber. Considering Bibby was the
point guard of record on a team that went to Game 7 of the
conference finals a year ago, Petrie is unmoved by the argument
that the Kings need to upgrade the position to win.
And don't forget Turkoglu, the supposed salary throw-in in the
Nets' deal. All available signs point to Jim Jackson being
offered way more money on the open market than the Kings are
willing to pay him to stay. As Jackson moves on, Turkoglu is the
first option to reclaim those minutes on the floor -- and several
Kings sources suggest they believe Turkoglu, at 24, is ready to
break through as a player.
The Kings' future, this is to say, may well lie in their present.
It is a notion that lacks the drama of Jason Kidd storming into
town. Whether it has legs of its own, we'll need another postseason
to learn.
