Webber Paces Kings Past Sixers

PHILADELPHIA, Mar. 4 (Ticker) -- Without Chris Webber, the Sacramento
Kings produced the NBA's best record. With Webber, they appear even
more dangerous.
In just his second game of the season, Webber collected 24 points, six
rebounds and 10 assists as the Kings defeated the Philadelphia 76ers,
114-105, for their ninth victory in their last 10 road games.
All-Star Peja Stojakovic added 27 points, Mike Bibby 21 and All-Star Brad
Miller 19 off the bench for the Kings, who had 32 assists on 35 baskets
as they improved to 20-2 against Eastern Conference teams this season.
"I'm not happy that we lost the game," Sixers coach Chris Ford said. "But
we were playing against one of the better teams in the league."
Webber missed the first 53 games after offseason knee surgery and an eight-
game suspension, but he has looked extremely sharp since returning. He had
26 points and 12 rebounds in 30 minutes in a win over the Los Angeles
Clippers on Tuesday and helped lead the decisive run in this one.
"I've been working hard and waiting to get back to this point," Webber said.
"It's hard for me to take it like everybody wants me to take it, to ease
back into it. So I'm just glad I'm just taking advantage of my opportunities
and just trying to make the best of it."
"I'm just amazed at him," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "The two games he's
played, he's played at a very high level. He shot the ball well. Tonight, he
had 10 assists and 20-plus points. We have such an advantage with those three
big guys (Webber, Miller and Vlade Divac), that we can run everything through
any of the three and that really makes a huge difference."
The Kings, who had 22 assists on 22 first-half field goals, blew a 14-point
halftime lead and trailed, 79-77, before embarking on a 17-1 burst bridging
the final two quarters. Miller scored seven points and Webber five during
the tear, which ended on a layup by Miller that made it 94-80 with 9:20 left.
"We started really walking around offensively, (and) we kept letting them get
to the basket and getting quick scores," Adelman said of the third quarter.
"But the start of the fourth quarter was huge. We got that quick spurt and
got the lead. That opened it up and made it difficult for them."
"We tied it up, 72-72," said Sixers forward Kenny Thomas, who had 15 points
and 13 rebounds. "Then it just seemed like they took over the game, and we
never had a chance after that."
Allen Iverson scored just 11 points on 2-of-21 shooting against the New York
Knicks on Wednesday, but he had 32 points on 13-of-22 shooting and 10 assists
for the Sixers, who have lost 18 of their last 24 games.
"They have a lot of firepower," Iverson said of the Kings. "It's hard to deal
with those guys, because they have five guys out on the court, all of them
are shooters, all of them are great passers, and all of them play unselfish.
It's just hard to stop them."
Iverson suffered tendinitis in his left Achilles fouling Bibby with 33 seconds
remaining and was in pain after the game.
"I did it at practice, my first full practice before we played on Wednesday,"
Iverson said. "I really didn't think (anything) of it. I didn't think it was
that serious. Then, when I played the game Wednesday, it was kind of tight,
and tonight I felt a little soreness, but it didn't affect me at all on the
court. And then once I tried to foul Mike Bibby, then I felt a sharp pain
and I just wanted to get it checked out and get some X-rays."

PHILADELPHIA - Peja Stojakovic scored 22 of his 27 points in the first half
and Chris Webber had 24 points and 10 assists, leading the Kings to a 114-105
victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday night.
Webber was playing his second game of the season for Sacramento, which has
won three straight and nine of its last 10 on the road. He had 26 points and
12 rebounds Tuesday in his debut after missing nine months to rehabilitate
his knee and serve an eight-game suspension.
Allen Iverson rebounded from Wednesday's 2-for-21 shooting performance to
score a team-high 32 for the Sixers, who have lost six of seven. Kenny Thomas
recorded his sixth straight double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
With Webber on the bench for the last half of the third quarter, the Sixers
ran off a 13-0 run that cut the lead to one. Philadelphia had a short-lived
79-77 advantage with 1:09 left in the quarter, but Sacramento regained the
lead on a jumper by Stojakovic and a layup from Mike Bibby. Brad Miller hit
a 3 at the buzzer to stretch the lead to four.
Webber had seven points and three assists during a 14-3 run that opened the
fourth quarter and put the Kings ahead by 15 with 8:24 to play. The Sixers
pulled within six in the final minute, but Bibby made five free throws to
seal the game.
Bibby had 21 points and Miller added 19 for Sacramento. Webber and Stojakovic
combined to go 16-for-17 from the line.
The Kings held a 27-15 lead 7:57 into the game before Webber was taken out.
Iverson, who missed his last 18 field-goal attempts in the previous night's
loss in New York, hit his first four shots and scored 12 points in the opening
quarter, including six during a 13-4 run that closed the period and cut the
lead to three.
Anthony Peeler and Bibby hit back-to-back 3s to spark a 12-0 Sacramento
spurt early in the second that helped the Kings regain their 12-point lead.
Stojakovic had nine of Sacramento's last 11 first-half points to help make
it 61-47 at halftime.
The Kings had 22 assists on 22 first-half field goals, while shooting 55
percent and going 6-for-9 from beyond the arc.
Sacramento swept the season series and has won seven straight against the
Sixers.
Notes:@ Philadelphia F Glenn Robinson was booed when he exited the game late
in the first half. Robinson, who missed two games over the weekend with elbow
synovitis, did not return after experiencing more pain in the joint. G Aaron
McKie played a season-low three minutes. ... Sixers general manager Billy
King addressed the fines levied against Allen Iverson for missing a practice
and a game in the last three weeks. King, who had been silent on the issue,
said Thursday that he fully supports the fines and interim coach Chris Ford's
decision to bench Iverson for the start of a Feb. 17 loss in Denver. "If I
didn't, you would have heard by now," King said. ... Jevon Kearse, the free
agent defensive end signed by the Eagles on Thursday and safety Brian Dawkins
received a standing ovation when announced to the crowd.
