Sacramento 100, Washington 92 Peja Powers Kings to Victory http://www.nba.com/games/20040328/WASSAC/recap.html SACRAMENTO, Calif., March 28 (Ticker) -- Peja Stojakovic scored 29 points, including a key 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, as the Sacramento Kings avoided a three-game losing streak with a 100-92 win over the Washington Wizards. The Kings didn't look much better than they had in losses to the Milwaukee Bucks and the rival Los Angeles Lakers. But they faced the third-worst team in the Eastern Conference. Point guard Mike Bibby, who added 21 points, is not concerned with the recent adversity surrounding the team. "That's what we do - we fight back," said Bibby, whose team has lost four of its last seven games. "We may have lost a few games, but we are coming down to the stretch and we're ready for the challenge. "We want to get the first seed. We've just got to stay ahead of the pack." Stojakovic's 3-pointer opened the fourth quarter and ignited an 11-2 spurt that gave Sacramento an 86-76 lead with 7:41 left. Washington pulled within 96-90 on a layup by Etan Thomas with 41 seconds remaining, but Chris Webber went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line against his former team to restore a double-digit lead. Stojakovic capped a 16-1 burst with a 3-pointer as Sacramento built a 66-55 lead with 4:17 remaining in the third quarter. Washington answered with a 15-5 run to close the period, inching within 75-74 on Kwame Brown's three-point play. "We came out lethargic, probably because we were a little bit tired, but once we got our legs, everyone got their second wind and started playing a little better," said Doug Christie, whose free throws pulled Sacramento within 54-52 with 8:17 left in the third. "We came out, got our hands on some loose balls, we started getting some rebounds because they had really been dominating the offensive boards. Once we start pumping our defense up, I think the offense just kind of falls into place." Stojakovic also grabbed 11 rebounds. Webber finished with 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists for the Kings, who have not dropped three straight regular-season games since January 24-28, 2003. Sacramento took a 2 1/2-game lead over Minnesota for the best mark in the Western Conference. The Kings played without starting center Vlade Divac- who missed only his sixth game with the team due to a stomach virus - and were outrebounded, 57-43. They were outscored in the paint for the 20th time in 23 games since the All-Star break. "All I know is we've got to get better in both areas," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "It's an area that we continue to try to work on. We look at film and everything else, but you've got to be able to go out there on the floor and do it." Gilbert Arenas scored 27 points and Brown and Larry Hughes contributed 18 apiece as the Wizards lost in Sacramento for the seventh straight time. Their last road win over the Kings came on December 16, 1996. Washington, which lost for the 19th time in 22 contests, was hurt by 19 turnovers, leading to 21 points. "We've been turning the ball over all year," Hughes said. "That hasn't given us a chance to win. We play pretty good basketball when we don't turn the ball over. Once we get that taken care of, we'll be all right. But that's been our Achilles' heel." -------------------------------------------------------------------- Kings beat Wizards 100-92 http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/basketball/kings/story/ 8673119p-9600924c.html Published 6:52 p.m. PST Sunday, March 28, 2004 Peja Stojakovic had 29 points and 11 rebounds Sunday, helping the Kings snap a two-game losing streak with a 100-92 win over the Washington Wizards.
