New Jersey 94, Sacramento 77 Nets Control Kings in Rout http://www.nba.com/games/20040316/SACNJN/recap.html EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., March 16 (Ticker) -- The New Jersey Nets ran the Western Conference's best team off the court. Rodney Rogers and Richard Jefferson led a first-half barrage as the Nets cruised to a 94-77 victory over the Sacramento Kings, who failed in a bid to clinch a playoff berth. New Jersey has lost the last two NBA Finals and is a mediocre 13-14 against the powerful Western Conference this season. One of the those losses was a 105-92 defeat at Sacramento on November 30 in which the Kings led by 32 points at halftime. "I don't think they're the best in the West," Jefferson said. "Let's be realistic. Right now, if they lose two more games, all of a sudden Minnesota is the best in the West. There is no best in the West or best in the East. Right now, San Antonio is the best in the West because they're the defending champions." Almost four months later, the Nets received big games from Rogers and Jefferson to more than return the favor. Rogers came off the bench to score 16 of his 20 points in the first half and the athletic Jefferson had 12 points in the opening half as the Nets built a 54-35 lead. Rogers scored 13 points in the second quarter, when the Nets led by as many as 28 points. Jason Kidd handed out 13 assists to lead a fast-break frenzy for the Nets , who led virtually the entire way and by as many as 30 points in the second half. New Jersey held a lopsided 30-6 advantage in fast-break points and had 32 assists on 39 baskets. "I thought our guys did a great job of setting the tone on the defensive end," said Nets coach Lawrence Frank, who improved to 19-5 since replacing Byron Scott. "As a result, we were able to get the transition buckets early in the game." Looking to join the Indiana Pacers as teams to clinch playoff berths, the Kings struggled the entire game. They were held to nine points in the first quarter, when they made 3-of-18 shots. Peja Stojakovic made 3-of-4 shots in the quarter while the rest of his teammates missed all 14 of their attempts. "We were awful offensively, early in the game," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "We didn't do anything offensively and they ran out on us. They beat us in every facet of the game in the first quarter and in the third quarter." Mike Bibby scored 17 points and Chris Webber 15 for the Kings, who lost for just the fourth time in 25 meetings against an Eastern Conference team. Sacramento also lost for just the fourth time in its last 15 games overall. Jefferson, who was guarded by Stojakovic, buried a 3-pointer, had two dunks and a fast-break layup in a 19-6 run to open the contest. The Nets made 11-of-20 shots in the period as they opened a commanding 26-9 lead. "They played and we didn't play," said Kings center Vlade Divac, who managed just two points in 20 minutes. "It's simple. We started the game awful. We just didn't make shots." Jefferson collected 19 points and Jason Collins 10 rebounds for New Jersey , which also held a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint. Rogers scored 13 points in under 4 1/2 minutes to trigger a 17-6 run to open the second quarter. His layup with 7:31 left before intermission capped the burst that provided a 43-15 bulge. "I came off the bench and shot the ball pretty well to give us a lift," said Rogers, who made 8-of-11 shots. In the opening half, the Nets shot 56 percent (22-of-39) compared to just 32.5 percent (13-of-40) for the Kings. intermission did nothing to slow down the Nets as Kenyon Martin opened the second half with a dunk, Jefferson converted a layup and Kerry Kittles scored on consecutive drives to the basket, pushing the advantage to 62-35. Kittles scored 11 of his 24 points in the third quarter for the Nets, who took their biggest lead at 71-41 on a free throw by Jefferson with 5:09 left. The Kings got no closer than the final score. Stojakovic made just one basket after the first quarter and finished with 11 points. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Nets led by as many as 30 points http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=240316017 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- For one night, the New Jersey Nets showed that the Eastern Conference can more than hold its own against the best in the West. Rodney Rogers hit his first six shots and the two-time defending Eastern Conference champions beat the Sacramento Kings on both offense and defense in a 94-77 victory on Tuesday night. "It was very important," said Rogers, who finished with 20 points on 8- of-11 shooting. "We're still trying to get ourselves back right. They're the best in the NBA right now. We had to set a standard and go out and play a good game against them." The win ended the Nets' three-game losing streak against the Kings and went a long way toward avenging a 105-92 decision in Sacramento on Nov. 30, a game in which the Kings led 60-28 at the half. "We just came out there and competed and we showed we can play with the best in this league," said Jason Kidd, whose 13 assists helped the Nets enjoy a 30-6 advantage on the fast break. This game was similar to the game in November, except the Nets dominated in leading by as many as 30 points. "They beat us," Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "I don't remember a game like this all year for us. Denver, in the second game of the year we got down early. We just played a poor game. This was about as bad as we have been." The Kings might have had an excuse. They arrived late at the Continental Airlines Arena from New York City because of traffic problems caused by a mid-March snowstorm, and they never really recovered in losing to an Eastern Conference team for only the fourth time in 25 games. "We have no excuses tonight," Adelman said. "They just handed us a good old whipping." The Nets hit 18 of their first 27 shots from the field and held the Kings to just nine first-quarter points, the lowest quarter of the season for the NBA's top-scoring team. Kerry Kittles, who hit four straight baskets early in the third quarter to end any hopes of a second-half comeback by Sacramento, led New Jersey with 24 points. Richard Jefferson added 19. Mike Bibby had 17 points for Sacramento and Chris Webber added 15, missing his first five shots and finishing 5-of-17. Peja Stojakovic had 11, all in the first half. The Nets probably played their best 16½ minutes of basketball all season in rolling to a 43-15 lead with 7:32 left in the first half. "We got off to a good start, which in the past we haven't done against Sacramento or any other good team," Kidd said. "We've always come from behind. It helped us to get off to a good start." New Jersey outscored Sacramento 21-4 in the final 8:13 of the first quarter to take a 26-9 lead. Jefferson and Kittles each had six in the run. Rogers certainly had his best eight minutes in two seasons with the Nets, hitting his first six shots, including four 3-pointers. The bulky backup power forward was so hot his fourth shot hit the back of the rim, went about seven feet straight up and went in on the way down, drawing smiles and laughs from every Net. Notes:The 20-point game was only Rogers' second of the season. His season high was 23 against the Kings in November. ...The Nets finished 39-of-79 from the field, or 49.4 percent. ...The Kings were 31-of-82, or 37.7 percent . ... F Kenyon Martin had eight points and six rebounds in 26 minutes in returning to the lineup after missing a game with an ankle injury. ... New Jersey had a 48-39 edge on the boards, with Jason Collins getting 10, one more than Kittles and two more the Rogers and Kidd. ...The Nets are 13-14 against the Western Conference. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 218.167.189.242
