Peja Stojakovic and Doug Christie each scored 22 points as the Kings had five players with 16 or more en route to a 120-102 rout of the Mavericks. Dallas defeated Sacramento in the 2003 Western Conference semifinals after Kings forward Chris Webber suffered a knee injury in Game Two. Webber returned last week and Sacramento - finally close to full strength - gave the Mavericks a taste of what they missed last year. The Kings dominated the first quarter, scoring 37 points on 16-of-23 shooting. Mike Bibby made all five of his shots and scored 10 points in the period as Sacramento built a 10-point lead and never looked back. Bibby finished with 21 points and 10 assists and Brad Miller collected 21 points and 16 rebounds as the Kings tied Indiana for the best record in the NBA. Webber had 16 points and eight rebounds for Sacramento, which shot 57 percent (48-of-85) from the floor and made 9-of-20 3-pointers against one of the league's worst defensive teams. Dirk Nowitzki scored 21 points to lead the Mavericks, who have lost four of their last five to fall two games behind the fourth-place Los Angeles Lakers in the West. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kings tie season high with 39 assists http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=240311023 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Chris Webber regained his rhythm against the very team that haunted him for 10 months. Webber had 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists in his first game against Dallas since hurting his knee against the Mavericks during last year's playoffs, and Sacramento beat Dallas for the first time in three meetings this season, 120-102 Thursday night. "I didn't feel it was a good game," Webber said. "The best is yet to come . But it does feel good not to stink the place up." Peja Stojakovic scored 22 points, Doug Christie added 22 and 12 assists, and Mike Bibby had 21 points and 10 assists as the Kings improved to 48-16 and moved into a tie with Indiana for the NBA's best record. Sacramento, 29-5 at home, also got 21 points and 16 rebounds from Brad Miller. The Kings' 39 assists tied their season-high. Dirk Nowitzki had 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists to lead the Mavericks, who lost their fourth straight road game. Sacramento is 4-1 with Webber back in the lineup, and coach Rick Adelman is going to let him play on consecutive nights for the first time this season when the Kings visit Portland on Friday. "I don't know how many times I have to say it, it's an evaluation every game," Adelman said. "I told him today I'm going to try to keep him around 33 or 34 minutes. I'll play him tomorrow and see how he reacts. He's going to be ready to play. He was so much more patient tonight. He seemed more relaxed and just let the game come to him." The five-time All-Star was activated Feb. 16, then suspended eight games for violating the league's anti-drug policy and lying to a federal grand jury. He played against the Los Angeles Clippers on March 2 and averaged 24 points in his first three games before resting his knee during a 107-90 win over Orlando on Sunday. Webber returned to the starting lineup Tuesday and struggled with just five points on 2-for-21 shooting in a 96-92 home win over Golden State. Michael Finley added 18 points and six assists, and Steve Nash had 13 points and seven assists for Dallas, which shot 41 percent and trailed by as many as 24. "We got our butts beat tonight," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. Mavericks forward Josh Howard played only 13 minutes after cutting his lip in the second quarter and receiving nine stitches. Webber tore cartilage in his left knee in Game 2 of the Western Conference semifinals -- a series Dallas won in seven games. He missed the first 58 games this season. Dallas, an NBA-best 29-4 at home, has struggled to an 11-20 mark on the road. The Mavericks are in a stretch of eight of 10 on the road, where they have lost eight of their last 10. "It's very frustrating," Nash said. "We've been inconsistent. That's kind of new territory for us." Nowitzki missed practice Wednesday with a stomach virus but started Thursday's game. Nelson said the star center didn't have much appetite and would be monitored for fatigue. He appeared to tire late in the game and shot 8-for-19. The Kings shot 69.6 percent (16-for-23) in the first quarter to build a 10-point lead and went ahead 64-52 at halftime. They were 48-for-85 (56.5 percent) for the game. Adelman is one victory shy of matching Les Harrison (295) for the most coaching wins in franchise history. Game notes The Kings had four players with 20 or more points for the first time this season. ... Nelson sent an e-mail to Golden State G Avery Johnson on Thursday offering him a spot on the Mavericks' coaching staff beginning this postseason. Johnson played for Nelson during his first stint with the Warriors and in Dallas. Johnson has said he plans to go into coaching soon. "He's got a standing offer from me to join my staff at any time," Nelson said. "I was hoping he would join us for the playoffs if they don't make it and be a part of our organization again. I love working with the guy. I think he will be a good head coach." The 5-foot-11 Johnson, in his 16th NBA season, seldom plays for the Warriors. He turns 39 later this month and has said he will retire sooner than later -- but hasn't given a definite timeline. ... When told about $50,000 fines handed down to Phil Jackson and the Lakers' organization by the NBA on Thursday for comments the coach made about officiating following a loss to the Utah Jazz, Nelson said: "Oh my goodness. I don't think I've every been fined more than $2,500 . I've been suspended." ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kings roll over Mavs 120-102 Published 9:55 p.m. PST Thursday, March 11, 2004 http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/basketball/kings/story/ 8486150p-9415082c.html Chris Webber regained his rhythm against the team that haunted him for 10 months.
