Kings notes: Massenburg urging physical play, defense

WASHINGTON - Tony Massenburg has no problem speaking his mind about virtu-
ally anything.
And the Kings power forward talked freely about his team needing to improve
its defensive approach.
Massenburg would love to be a part of the equation, but whether he plays or
not, the veteran continues to harp on the need for improved physical play
and defense.
Massenburg, who did not play Wednesday night in the Kings' 114-108 loss to
the Washington Wizards, said as much before the game.
"I have never said that we cannot win a title with this team," Massenburg
said. "All I've ever said is we need to improve our defense, and if that's
a news flash, then I'll be the one to take the hit. We're a shooting team,
and that's the way it is. But come on, this is the team I'm on, and I bel-
ieve in it."
Webber wants to play - Chris Webber wants to learn his capabilities now,
not when the playoffs are in full bloom.
"It's almost like what (Philadelphia's) Allen Iverson said the other day,"
Webber said. "This is what I do. I play, and I want to know what I can do
and what I can't do while the season is going on.
"Regardless of what anybody thinks, this is still my team. And if it does
not win, I'm going to get the blame for it not winning. So give me the
opportunity to do what I do and see what I can do."
Webber says he has no problem with the way coach Rick Adelman has used him
since he returned from a knee injury.
"Of course I want to play more, and I always will," Webber said. "But coach
has done it exactly the way he should have, and I agree exactly with how
he's handled things. If we had the opportunity to do it all over again,
then I'd say we should do it exactly the same way."
Stackhouse steps up - Washington swingman Jerry Stackhouse missed most of
the season with a knee injury, but he was huge against the Kings with 21
points, seven assists and three steals.
Stackhouse says his team has to be patient with its core of young big men.
"Kwame (Brown) was huge," Stackhouse said of the former No. 1 overall draft
choice. "He is growing up, and he is getting better. He and Brendan (Haywood
) and Etan (Thomas) are getting better. We have a really young group of ta-
lented big guys. We have to groom them. There are going to be nights when we
shake our heads. It is great to have nights like this when we shake our head
-s, but in a positive way."

Peja,Bibby
