Odom Shoulders Load With Triple-Double

MIAMI, March 6 (Ticker) -- Lamar Odom showed just how determined he is
to carry the Miami Heat into the playoffs.
Odom scored a season-high 30 points, grabbed a career-high 19 rebounds
and handed out 11 assists to lead the Heat to a 102-96 upset of the
Sacramento Kings.
"That has to be one of the best games played in this league for the
entire year," Heat coach Stan Van Gundy said. "I have seen a lot of
great performances here by a lot of great players, but there haven't
been any better than that. That is a phenomenal performance."
The triple-double was the first by a member of the Heat in 739 games
-- ending the NBA's longest current drought -- and the eighth of Odom's
career.
"Getting a triple-double is something I always strive for," said Odom,
who made 11-of-18 shots. "The best part of it is the 19 rebounds and 11
assists because scoring happens, but putting up those kinds of numbers
in rebounds and assists shows you're getting your teammates involved.
And that's very rewarding."
The win moved Miami (27-36) into a tie with Boston for seventh place in
the Eastern Conference. The top eight teams make the playoffs.
The Kings came in with the league's best record and a 20-2 mark against
Eastern Conference teams, but they had no answer for the versatile Odom
and left with a surprising loss.
The 6-10 forward was matched mostly against Kings All-Star forward Chris
Webber, who played his third game since returning from knee surgery and
a suspension. Webber is still running with a slight limp and was no match
for Odom's quickness.
"He had a great game tonight," said Webber, who had 22 points and nine
rebounds. "He's almost like a point forward. They put the ball in his
hands and let him do what he does. He's a heck of a player, he always
has been."
Driving into the lane with ease and setting up teammates for open shots,
Odom had 21 points, nine rebounds and five assists in the first half,
when Miami opened a 48-39 lead.
Sacramento scored the first 10 points of the second half and took the
lead on a jumper by Mike Bibby with 9:46 left in the third quarter.
Bibby finished with 24 points.
A pair of free throws by Eddie Jones gave Miami the lead for good, 86-84,
with 3:56 remaining in the final period.
Odom penetrated the lane and whipped a pass to Rafer Alston, who drilled
a 3-pointer from the right side to increase the advantage to 94-88 with
2:05 left.
Alston was the beneficiary of most of Odom's assists, finishing with 20
points. Rasual Butler and Udonis Haslem each added 17 off the bench.
Jones made three free throws in the final 24 seconds to seal the win and
played smothering defense on Sacramento's Peja Stojakovic, who made just
4-of-13 shots and finished with 14 points.

MIAMI - Lamar Odom earned the first triple-double by a Miami Heat player
in nine years with 30 points, 19 rebounds and 11 assists to help beat
the Kings 102-96 Saturday.
The triple-double was the fourth in Heat history and Odom's eighth. He
achieved a season high in points and a career high in rebounds, and he
matched his career high in assists.
Rafer Alston scored 20 points for Miami. Reserves Rasual Butler and
Udonis Haslem added 17 apiece.
Mike Bibby scored 24 points and Chris Webber 22 for the Kings. Peja
Stojakovic went 4-for-13 and scored just 14 points.
The Kings, who shot 39 percent, came into the game with the NBA's best
record, but fell to 20-3 against the Eastern Conference.
They couldn't stop Odom, especially down the stretch. First he grabbed
a rebound and threw a long pass to Butler, who drove the rest of the way
for a layup and an 88-84 lead.
Odom then achieved the triple-double when he earned his 10th assist with
2:46 left. He stumbled to the floor on a drive, and two Kings were battling
him for the ball when it rolled to Haslem, who sank a layup for 90-86 lead.
Another assist by Odom set up Alston's 3-pointer that made it 94-88.
Eddie Jones went 1-for-8 from the field, but made three free throws in the
final 23 seconds to help sew up the victory. He finished with 10 points.
Odom had 15 points in the opening quarter, but his teammates shot 3-for-15
and the score was 23-23 after one period. A 14-3 run in the second quarter
gave the Heat their biggest lead at 45-32.
Miami committed six turnovers in eight possessions as the Kings scored 14
consecutive points to lead 49-48 early in the second half.
Jones, the Heat's leading scorer this season, was held scoreless until he
sank a basket with 6:46 left in the third quarter.
Miami coach Stan Van Gundy used only seven players. His team outscored the
Kings 44-28 in the paint.
Notes: The Heat's stretch of 739 games without a triple-double was the
longest in the NBA. Utah now has the longest at 390. ... The last Heat
player to record a triple-double was Billy Owens on Jan. 5, 1995. ...
Sacramento's other Eastern Conference losses were at Boston and at New York
on Nov. 7 and Nov. 9. ... The Kings fell to 3-13 in Miami. They last won
in Miami on Dec. 9, 2001.
