Kings Hold Off Hawks Down Stretch
ATLANTA, Dec. 19 (Ticker) -- The lowly Atlanta Hawks had things interesting
against the powerful Sacramento Kings before Mike Bibby and Brad Miller
took over.
Bibby and Miller hit back-to-back 3-pointers to break open the game down
the stretch as the Kings handed the Hawks a sixth straight defeat, 98-86.
Peja Stojakovic scored 31 points and Miller added 17 and 12 rebounds for
the Kings, who had lost 13 of their last 14 games in Atlanta.
Sacramento, which is 13-1 at home but entered the contest 4-5 on the road,
held just an 84-81 lead before Bibby nailed a 3-pointer with 4:01 remaining
and Miller added a shot from the top of the arc to make it 90-81 with 3:10
to play.
"We didn't let them get back over the hump," Bibby said. "We got some shots
when we needed to. We scored when we needed to. (The threes were) at the
right time, I'll tell you that. We hit them at the right time. They were on
their way. I think it was a big dagger for them."
"We had to finish the game," Miller said. "We really don't panic or get
worried at the end of the games, and that's how you win games. You stay
calm and just stick with the plan of what we're doing the rest of the
game. Somebody's going to step up on this team."
Jason Terry overcame bronchitis to score 25 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim
added 21 and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who fell to 7-21.
"We just need to win one," Terry said. "If you win one, it can be contagi-
ous. It can turn into two, three, four wins in a row. We haven't done that
all year long."
The Kings held a 54-41 advantage after a basket by Vlade Divac opened the
second half. The Hawks went on an 11-0 run, pulling within 54-52 on a 3
-pointer by Terry with 9:03 left in the quarter, but never tied the contest
and allowed the Kings to take a 77-69 edge into the final 12 minutes.
Sacramento was extremely sharp with the ball, dishing out 24 assists while
committing just nine turnovers. Atlanta had 14 assists and 15 giveaways.
"On offense, it was one thing or another," Hawks coach Terry Stotts said.
"We couldn't get a shot up or we would have a couple of turnovers on tight
passes. We just couldn't quite finish like we needed to. We didn't finish
but we kept working defensively. I thought we made them take tough shots,
and that's all you can ask for."
"We made some good plays and made some shots to open it up to 10 again,"
Kings coach Rick Adelman said. "We responded to their run, made some stops
that you need to make and got a good win on the road."
