Sacramento 91, Indiana 88
Newest King Haunts Former Team
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Dec. 7 (Ticker) -- Brad Miller had his second career
triple-double in his first game against his former team, and Vlade Divac
helped rattle the Indiana Pacers down the stretch as the Sacramento Kings
posted a 91-88 victory.
The Pacers trailed by as many as 16 points in the third quarter but rallied
without Ron Artest, their second-leading scorer who was ejected for arguing
a call late in the second quarter.
Indiana had an 88-87 lead after Austin Croshere made a 3-pointer from the
left corner with 3:14 remaining but did not score again.
Divac responded 19 seconds later with a spinning layup to give Sacramento
the lead for good, then drew fouls on star Jermaine O'Neal at both ends of
the floor just eight seconds apart.
"Down the stretch, we played better defense," Divac said. "We cannot afford
to look careless in the fourth quarter and give them easy shots."
"I don't want to talk about (the officials) because you know what happens
when you talk about it," O'Neal said. "It came down to a few things here
and there."
Frustrated by the calls, O'Neal was given a warning before the ensuing
inbounds pass and missed a jumper that could have given Indiana the lead
with 1:43 remaining.
Sacramento's Peja Stojakovic, who scored 27 points, missed a jumper with
85 seconds to go. O'Neal grabbed the rebound and got another on a miss by
teammate Reggie Miller at the other end before missing another jumper with
29 seconds left.
Stojakovic sank a pair of free throws 17 seconds later, giving him
11 points in the final quarter.
The Pacers could not get the ball to Reggie Miller on their final
possession and Jamison Brewer barely hit the rim on a 3-pointer as
time expired.
"You know that's where (the Pacers) are going," Brad Miller said. "I
mean it's the Pacers, you think of Reggie Miller. We just stayed up on
everybody. Anybody can shoot the three, but you have to pressure them
and make it tough."
Brad Miller, who was acquired from Indiana in a three-team offseason
trade, had 18 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists. It was his second
triple-double in 18 games with the Kings.
"It was really tough," he said of facing his former teammates. "I talked
to (Indiana center) Jeff Foster last night and he kept calling me triple
-double. I think that jinxed him for tonight."
Divac had 12 points and a season-high 10 rebounds for Sacramento, which
held on, despite scoring just 34 points in the second half.
"We just allowed them back in the game," Kings coach Rick Adelman said.
"We didn't react very well. We had the 16-point lead and we were acting
like we were 16 points down, trying to get it all back. We have to
have better composure than that."
O'Neal finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds and Al Harrington added 17
and nine as Indiana shot 39 percent (32-of-82) in the finale of their 2-3
road trip against Western Conference teams.
"It's been a long week," O'Neal said. "I just want to get back and play on
our home court. It hasn't been right for us on the road."

Arco
Reggie Miller
Kenny
