The Kings avoid a road loss to the lowly Bulls, but Bobby Jackson is hurt
beforehalftime and doesn't return.

CHICAGO - The troops were disappearing in front of coach Rick Adelman's
eyes, but fortunately for him, the last eight standing made sure the
Kings left the Windy City with a win.
All-Star forward Peja Stojakovic scored a game-high 24 points, but it was
lesser lights such as Anthony Peeler and Darius Songaila who ably assisted
veterans Mike Bibby and Vlade Divac, helping the Kings to a hard-fought,
ugly, yet satisfying 91-83 victory over the Bulls before 20,172 at Chicago
Stadium on Friday night.
The Kings (39-14) improved to 15-10 on the road because they had more
experience and poise to deal with whatever came their way. Before the
game, the team learned it was down to nine players because forward Tony
Massenburg was suffering from food poisoning.

With 3:43 left in the second quarter, nine turned into eight when guard
Bobby Jackson drove to the basket and was contested by Chicago's Marcus
Fizer.

Jackson tried to bring up the ball with both hands while Fizer pulled
the ball in the other direction. Fizer was called for a foul, and the
force of the meeting sent Jackson crashing to the floor.

Jackson was helped to his feet by his teammates, but it was clear he
had aggravated the abdominal strain that forced him to miss three games
before the All-Star break.

Jackson stayed in the game to make his two free throws, then went to the
locker room accompanied by Kings trainer Pete Youngman. He did come back

and likely not for a while, if his words and those of Adelman count for
anything.

to the month of February or March was unclear, but the last thing the
Kings want is this injury to affect his playoff performance.
Adelman will certainly do his best to make sure Jackson is 100 percent
before he returns.

"It's hard because he is the guy that brings energy off the bench,"
Adelman said. "He gives us a real spark. The important thing is to get
him healthy now.
"We have to figure out how serious it is since it's the second time he's
done it. We need to be really cautious for when we bring him back."
It will be much easier to be cautious if Adelman keeps receiving
contributions as he did Friday night. The coach expects Bibby (17 points,
eight assists), Divac (11 rebounds, 11 assists, four blocks and a huge
jump shot late in the fourth quarter as part of a game-high 44 minutes)
and Doug Christie (10 points, another huge fourth-quarter jumper and
three steals) to step up.
But timely contributions from Peeler (10 points, 19 minutes), Jabari Smith
(six points, seven rebounds and two assists in 18 minutes) and Songaila (
10 points, 11 rebounds and constant effort) are what make games like this
truly satisfying for the Kings' coaches and players.
The Kings led the entire second half and never let the Bulls and their
home crowd be swayed by momentum.
"We got back in the game," said Chicago coach Scott Skiles, whose team
made just 6 of 23 fourth-quarter field-goal attempts. "But as it happens
so much, we battle back and then just aren't able to make the big plays
that are necessary to win."
