Sacramento 103, Houston 74
Kings Rack Up Seventh Straight
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 28 (Ticker) -- Brad Miller and the Sacramento
Kings proved too much for the Houston Rockets' defense to handle.
Miller scored a season-high 29 points to lead the Kings to their seventh
straight win, a 103-74 rout of the Rockets.
Houston had been allowing just 82.2 points per game, the lowest total in
the Western Conference. But its defense was no mtach for Sacramento's ball
movement and shooting. The Kings had 33 assists on 41 baskets and shot 52
percent from the field.
"Offensively, we took advantage of what we could get," Kings coach Rick
Adelman said. "The guys were really tuned in to what they like to do
defensively and we really had answers for it."
"They came out a little lazy with the ball and everyone was just talking
and clicking together tonight," Miller added.
Mike Bibby and Bobby Jackson each added 18 points as Sacramento extended
its home winning streak to 16 games. It is 9-0 at ARCO Arena this season
and has not lost at home since Feb. 16 against Dallas.
Cuttino Mobley led Houston with 17 points, Steve Francis had 15 and Yao
Ming 14 as the Rockets fell to 1-3 on a road trip that concludes Saturday
in Seattle.
"We went wrong on both ends of the floor," Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy
said. "We had some shots that we missed early. And we didn't compete when
it didn't go well for us offensively."
Yao's jumper at 8:50 of the first quarter gave Houston a 9-8 lead. But
Sacramento responded with a 14-0 run and never trailed thereafter.
"We set the tone in the first quarter by playing hard on defense," Kings
center Vlade Divac said.
"Everybody came out and played well on the defensive end," Jackson added.
"We played as a unit. If we can do that every night, it's gonna be hard
to beat us."
Houston shot just 36 percent (28-of-77). Francis' struggles continued as
he hit 6-of-16 shots and committed three of the Rockets' 18 turnovers.
Houston's point guard has 17 turnovers in the past three games.
With Francis struggling, the Rockets' offense did not run smoothly, tying
a season low with 11 assists. Houston missed 11 consecutive shots in the
first quarter and trailed, 25-14, at the end of the period.
"We're not a high-assist team," Van Gundy said. "And we're especially not
a high-assist team when we don't make shots. So you can't get any assists
when the ball's not going in."
Sacramento played solid defense throughout and had a season-high 15 steals.
The Kings built a 54-28 halftime advantage and led by as many as 34 points
in the second half.
