Peja Power Leads Kings Over Wolves
MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 5 (Ticker) -- Peja Stojakovic added some clutch
rebounding to his clutch shooting.
Stojakovic scored seven of his 34 points in overtime and came down with
a huge rebound in the waning seconds as the Sacramento Kings came away
with a rare road win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, 125-121.
One of the best shooters in the NBA, Stojakovic had his primary skill on
full display, drilling a three-pointer to give the Kings a 119-114 lead
with 2:03 remaining. On the next possession, he answered a dunk by Mark
Madsen with a jumper at the 1:27 mark.
The Timberwolves closed to 123-120 with 48 seconds left on another
basket by Madsen, who had an energetic 12 points and eight rebounds off
the bench. On the ensuing possession, Latrell Sprewell was fouled by
Bobby Jackson while shooting a three-pointer with 14 seconds to go.
Sprewell made the first free throw but missed the second. He appeared
to purposely miss the third, and the strategy almost worked. Fred
Hoiberg just missed a tip and the rebound was grabbed by Kevin Garnett
, who missed a turnaround jumper.
"The second felt good," Sprewell said. "It just rattled out, and at that
point I was just ticked off. I just missed the third one. At least KG
got in there and we had a shot at it."
Stojakovic, a perimeter player who has averaged 4.8 rebounds in his
career, sneaked inside and wrestled away the rebound. He was fouled
on the ensuing possession and drained two free throws to seal the
win, just the second for Sacramento in its last 12 visits to Minnesota.
"If I move without the ball and work off our big guys to get good
position -- and not try to do a lot of things with the ball, like
dribbling -- is when we're at our best," Stojakovic said.
Stojakovic made 11-for-19 shots, including 5-for-6 three-pointers.
He has won the Shootout at All-Star Weekend the last two years.
"When he is hot, he is hot, just like any other shooter," Kings center
Vlade Divac said. "You can't do anything. Every coverage doesn't work."
"I'm glad he caught fire," Kings guard Bobby Jackson said. "The guy can
straight-out shoot."
Mike Bibby scored 22 points and Divac added 19, 10 assists and eight
rebounds for Sacramento, which began a three-game road trip by shooting
50 percent (46-for-92), including 9-for-14 from the arc.
"We had nice plays offensively and executed down the stretch," Kings
coach Rick Adelman said. "This was a very nice way to start the trip."
Garnett scored 28 points and Sam Cassell added 26 and 14 assists for
the Timberwolves, who shot 51.5 percent (52-for-101) but fell to 2-3
with their second home loss.
After acquiring Sprewell, Cassell and center Michael Olowokandi in the
offseason, Minnesota was considered among the top teams in the powerful
Western Conference. But Sprewell has started slowly and Cassell and
Olowokandi are nursing injuries.
" We don't (care) about the offensive end. It's the defense that we
stress," Garnett said. "Everybody is going to get the system. Slowly
but surely, guys are going to come back, and we are going to be in a
rhythm."
Stojakovic was in a rhythm in the third quarter, scoring 13 points as
the Kings turned a 58-51 deficit into an 87-86 lead. He added a jumper
and three-pointer early in the fourth period before his technical foul
shot -- following a whistle against Garnett -- made it 100-93 with 7:42
to go.
"The difference was we were hitting twos and they were hitting threes,"
Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said.
Sprewell's three-pointer forged a 106-106 tie with 3:34 left. Jackson
made a layup, but Madsen followed in a miss by Garnett to tie it again
with 1:01 to play. Garnett's two free throws gave Minnesota the lead,
but Bibby got loose for a layup with 11 seconds to go that forced the
extra session.
Jackson scored 19 points and Brad Miller added 17 and eight boards for
the Kings. Sprewell scored 23 points for the Wolves.

Stojakovic
Peja
Michael Olowokandi
Latrell Sprewell
