The marketing types took a liking to DeMarcus Cousins months before he had
played a game at Arco Arena, as evidenced by the poster of the Kings rookie
on the side of Arco.

But the hype would mean little if Cousins didn't have any game to back up the
hoopla.
但是過多的期待真的能轉換為實際表現嗎？
One exhibition game into his NBA career, Cousins justified the excitement.

The Kings' first-round pick had 16 points and 16 rebounds in a 109-95 win
over the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night at Arco.

"I thought DeMarcus gave us everything we're looking for in the post on both
ends of the floor," Kings coach Paul Westphal said after the exhibition
opener for both teams. "He showed why we think so highly of him. And if he
ever gets in shape, he'll really be able to do a lot."

Cousins' conditioning was criticized before the Kings drafted him fifth
overall in June.
Cousins averaged just 23.5 minutes in his lone season at Kentucky. He played
29 minutes, 47 seconds against the Suns.

Cousins made 8 of 13 shots. Five of his rebounds were offensive rebounds.
Westphal said the plan was to play Cousins in four- to five-minute intervals
to keep him fresh and that he did well.

"That wasn't by (the game) clock, but I wasn't going to leave him in longer

When Cousins was in the game, he was impressive. He scored from the
perimeter, and in the post with touch and with powerful dunks.

"Cousins is going to be a real solid player for them," said Suns coach Alvin
Gentry. "He is going to have some ups and downs, but he is a real skilled big
guy that can do some things."

Unlike in his summer-league outings against rookies and players on the fringe
of the NBA, Cousins went against Robin Lopez, the only Suns starter to play

Cousins said the way Westphal used him was fine as he eases into the NBA game.

the regular season, he just wants me to get a taste and get a groove going
with the whole game and see it."

Westphal was able to have fun at the expense of his prized rookie, who was
called for traveling late, one of his five turnovers.

For Westphal, it was proof Cousins had plenty of energy.

"He held up fine," Westphal said. "He was so excited at the end of the game,
he was so happy, he jumped up and down before he made his move."

Cousins wasn't surprised by his debut. He has high expectations for himself.

"That's what I do – I produce," Cousins said. "I find some type of way to

Tyreke Evans led the Kings with 26 points and five assists. Jason Thompson
came off the bench to add 17 points and 10 rebounds.
