Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins has had a tumultuous second season.
His numbers (13.9 points, 9.8 rebounds) are about the same as last year, his
team is struggling (4-10, the same as last year at this point) and the coach
he butted heads with, Paul Westphal, suspended him for a game before being
fired two weeks ago.

Saturday, Cousins, who is 6-11, 270 pounds, was calmed by 5-9, 185-pound
rookie guard Isaiah Thomas in the Kings' locker room after a 99-60 loss at
the Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Bee reporter Jason Jones tweeted. A
cameraman commented on Cousins' request not to be photographed while
dressing. Cousins stood up, and Thomas tugged on his sweatshirt and said it
was not worth it. Cousins then sat down.

Cousins is wary of his surroundings but still can be seen joking with
teammates before games. "DeMarcus is a good guy. He really is," rookie
teammate Jimmer Fredette says. "Sometimes he gets a bad rap. It's not all
fair to him. He's fun to be around."
New coach Keith Smart voices his unwavering support for Cousins. "Remember, I
got your back," Smart says as player and coach share a laugh.

How difficult has this season been?

"People don't know the real me. They believe what they hear and they take it
and run with it. It's hard to continue to be yourself. At the same time, my
teammates know who I am, my coaching staff knows who I am. They know what I
do. That's all that matters."

worst in the world, but you'll never know because all they do is brag about
what they do great. When everything is positive and you're winning, they're
going to keep it positive. But when everything is negative, they're going to
try and keep it negative."

"Honestly, it came from me. I made a mistake in high school on the bus (as a
sophomore, he got into an altercation with a faculty member) and it came from
there. I got red flags … on off the court issues. I never had an issue off
the court. You can check my criminal record. Never had a problem, but I'm the
worst person in the world."

"It has. Everything has been positive right now. Coach isn't scared to speak
his mind. He's going to tell the truth. He's going to tell you how it should
be and how it's not going to be. He sets his guidelines and we all go by
them. That's something that we needed from the beginning. Coach is going to
be real. If you mess up he's going to tell you, 'You messed up.' That's all
we needed from the beginning."

"We didn't, honestly. And it showed."

You complained about the offense. Do you like it now?

"It has changed. It's a lot more motion. Everybody's touching it. … We still
got a lot of growing to do. We're doing it every day. Each game. We all know
it's going to take a while. It's not something that's just going to change
overnight. Learn a new system, learning how to play off each other in this
new system, hopefully we can get it this year. Talent-wise, I believe we have
all the right pieces."

"I do. If I sneeze the wrong way, 'DeMarcus trying to sneeze on somebody.'
I've got to be careful with everything I do, with everything I say. I do have
a narrow line I have to walk on. I think about it every day. It's always in
the back of my head. I don't believe there's anybody in the situation I'm in.
I listen to people's advice. Everybody thinks they have the right answer, but
there's really no right answers to dealing with this. You've just got to go
through it."
