That's because Kings coach Keith Smart suggested Cousins needs to be shooting
55 percent from the field. Cousins is shooting 43.6 percent this season.

The Kings' second-year center has shown improvement this season but needs to
make more of his shots to ascend to elite status. His shooting this season is
barely above his rookie season (43 percent) and ranks 49th in the NBA.

Cousins is still averaging 16.5 points, but that figure would increase with
better shooting, and put him on course to be an All-Star with his 11.2
rebounds.

That's because Cousins has shown he can create chances to score. He leads the
NBA in offensive rebounds (4.3 per game), which should translate into easy
scoring opportunities. Smart would like to see his budding star take his
time, create space with his body and finish with power around the rim.

Smart said Cousins often rushes his shots in the paint or leads with the

Cousins spent a good part of his offseason working on finishing strong around
the rim with dunks. That he doesn't do it more is even a mystery to himself.
More times than not, Cousins ends up trying to tap the ball in with one hand
or tries to get the ball in off the glass.

"I really can't tell you why I do it," Cousins said. "And when I go back and

Smart said it will take more repetition for Cousins to make that a habit.

as much as he'd like. He takes a lot of jump shots, which doesn't help his
shooting percentage.

Smart did work with another center with perimeter skills, Zydrunas Ilgauskas,
who shot 47.6 percent in his career.

Creating space is a tough thing for Cousins, who leads the NBA with four
fouls per game and is always wary of drawing fouls.

"I really don't know my limitations," Cousins said. "One day it's ticky-tack,
the other day they can beat up on you. You never know.

"With me, when I lead with the body, the first (thing) they yell (is) that I
jumped into them."

Figuring that out comes with experience, which Cousins and Smart acknowledge.
Cousins played only one year of college ball at Kentucky and is still very
early in his NBA career.

"It's going to take time," he said.

cracked 44 percent in his two seasons.

season, but I still want to continue to get better. I believe that is
possible for me. I've just got to keep working."
