Hassan Whiteside is that rare 7-footer who sneaks up on people. Even as an
emerging prep standout in Gastonia, N.C., a lush, leafy suburb west of
Charlotte, he got lost among the trees. Once, out of frustration, his mother
charged into the sports department of the Gaston Gazette newspaper and, in so
many words, introduced her son.

"She (Debbie) came in and said, 'My son goes to school here,' " related
sports editor Gabe Whisnant. " 'He plays basketball. My family still lives

Whiteside remains an intriguing open book with blank pages. He dropped to the
Kings (33rd) after interviewing poorly at the Chicago predraft combine, but
even that seems a bit of a stretch, considering everything he accomplished
during his freshman season at Marshall. He led the nation in blocked shots
(5.3) and triple doubles (three). He fouled out once.

Though his passing is shaky, Whiteside doesn't just dunk. He isn't just big.
Exceptionally mobile for someone with his size and length, he converts
mid-range jumpers, scores off angles and bank shots, and because he's almost
ambidextrous, he uses both hands effectively around the basket.

"Hassan has gifts you can't teach," said Darren Tillis, the former NBA player
and an assistant last season at Marshall. "He can make freak plays, jumping

Whiteside, who is back in town after attending various camps in Houston and
Las Vegas, half-jokingly mentions that as late as the eighth grade, he was a

Living with his mother and six siblings, he briefly attended Hunter Huss,

in Newark, N.J., but became unsettled by the violent area and returned to
North Carolina, graduating from Hope Christian Academy.

After flourishing during an additional year at prep school in Lenoir, N.C.,

presumably, more meals than blocked shots (5.3). Fortunately for the Kings –
and Whiteside's career – his menu of choice is heavy on the chicken breast,
fish, fruits and vegetables.

Whiteside, 21, throws up his hands and laughs. He is soft-spoken and a bit
shy, and his mannerisms suggest someone who is seldom in a hurry. With no
major travel plans on the agenda, he has spent the summer trying to add 20
pounds to his gangly 235-pound frame, with a particular emphasis on
strengthening his lower body.

According to Tillis, who recently followed former Marshall head coach Donnie
Jones to Central Florida, Whiteside was one of his sharpest students. He

days later, saw his center stroking stepback jumpers from the baseline.

If he gets lonely, he says, he visits Tyreke Evans. He's also eager for
DeMarcus Cousins to arrive; the two became acquainted earlier this month at
the NBA Rookie Orientation seminar in New York. Turns out both had conducted
background checks well before the draft.
