Before the Kings began summer league play in July, some of Hassan Whiteside's
new teammates toyed around with nicknames for the rookie center.

Swat and Stretch Armstrong were popular, but for most of the preseason,
Whiteside hadn't been able to get on the court to show why either name would
fit him.

A little more than a minute into his preseason debut, Utah Jazz forward
Andrei Kirilenko got an idea of how the 7-foot rookie earned such monikers
when Whiteside swatted Kirelenko's attempt by the rim back at him.

It was a fitting way for Whiteside to come out in what ended up being an
82-71 loss to the Jazz at EnergySolutions Arena.
Whiteside took the floor for the first time with 5:56 left in the first
quarter.

"I was excited coming out there," Whiteside said. "I was ready to play
because I've been watching from the sidelines for so long. Just getting to
play with my teammates, I was real excited."

Whiteside had watched the previous six exhibition games with a left patellar
tendon strain. He was hurt Sept. 30 when he landed awkwardly after a dunk in

Whiteside played 14 minutes and had six points, four rebounds and two blocked
shots.

"They didn't really drive as much as I hoped they did," Whiteside said. "I

Whiteside's time on the floor was a glimpse of why the Kings are so high on
him.

The Kings drafted Whiteside and traded for Samuel Dalembert to improve their
interior defense, but have had neither for exhibition games because of
injuries.

Whiteside showed good instincts on defense, especially considering he hadn't
played at all and is still working his way through the playbook.

made a mistake and admitted he wasn't always in the right spot against the

Kings coach Paul Westphal said it was "nice" that Whiteside looked
comfortable and made an impact on defense early.

said. "I think he can give us a nice presence in the middle. He doesn't know
our plays. He doesn't know what the other team is trying to do to him right

himself.

He began doing some work on the court Tuesday before the Kings played the
Clippers in Los Angeles.

On Wednesday, Whiteside was able to play 5-on-0 and was cleared to practice
fully on Thursday.

Friday night, when he made his first basket on a put-back with 7:35 left in
the second quarter, his teammates stood and cheered.

"It's his first game, so he's not as experienced as the rest of the rookies.
But once he gets to playing more, I think his game is going to improve a
lot," said rookie center DeMarcus Cousins.
