Of all the tattoos on Darnell Jackson's body, it's one on his right wrist
that speaks to the pain he has endured and his optimism.

It's a simple phrase: "Suicide is not an option."

The Kings forward calls the tattoo his "reminder."

"If I'm out here working out or if I'm sitting in a room or if I'm working
out in the weight room, I always just take a glance at my wrist and be like,
'Suicide is not an option,' " Jackson said.

Jackson had the tattoo added after the death of his mother, Shawn Jackson.
She took her life in March by overdosing on pain pills following a May 2005
car crash.

Jackson said his life has been filled with tragedy. Friends and family,
including his father, have been killed. The car accident caused by a drunken
driver that injured his mother claimed the life of his grandmother, Evon.

Nevertheless, Jackson doesn't hang his head. He dealt with anger and hurt
following the loss of his mother. Today, he savors his job.

"I know life is hard, but I could be doing something else right now," Jackson
said. "I love doing this. I'm enjoying every minute of it. Every chance I get

When training camp began, Jackson was far from a lock to make the Kings'
roster. He was acquired from Milwaukee for Jon Brockman.

Jackson has earned praise for his smarts and hustle. He is a physical player
on defense who also can make an open mid-range jumper.

The kind of player Jackson is began to take shape in the spring. The month he
lost his mother, Jackson was waived by Cleveland.

Milwaukee claimed Jackson on waivers. He admittedly was angry and let his
emotions affect him.

Jackson credits the Milwaukee coaching staff with helping him deal with his
emotions. He said assistant coach Adrian Griffin was especially helpful,
sending encouraging text messages and being supportive.

"A little encouragement goes a long way," said Griffin, now a Chicago
assistant, "and I know that I wouldn't be here if people didn't encourage me."

Griffin lost his father in his second season in the NBA and used the
experience to help Jackson.

Griffin said the entire staff encouraged Jackson.

"Just getting to know Darnell, he has a good heart," Griffin said. "I was
very impressed with his work ethic and how he picked up on things."

Griffin said he noticed a change in Jackson with the birth of his daughter,
Evonna, on April 15.

Wanting to be an example for his daughter and his siblings keeps Jackson
going.
"I used to have crazy thoughts, be like, 'Man, why is this happening?' and,
'Man, I want this to happen,' " Jackson said. "But now being around older
people and older adults and great coaches is helping to me understand it's a
process. Life is a process. And everything I've learned from Cleveland to
Milwaukee to here, I just soak it in."

And what he has learned goes beyond the court. Jackson accepts being a role
model because he knows what not having mentors is like.
He wants to help kids fill the void he experienced growing up and has started
the Darnell Jackson Mentoring Challenge.

Jackson graduated from Kansas in African American studies and would like to
teach and coach.

Ideally, he'd start with a group of young players and guide them to
adulthood, as his mentors from the Boys & Girls Club did for him.

Even in that endeavor, Jackson knows he doesn't have all the answers. He
takes advice from everyone around him.

So in between listening to tips on footwork or a drop-step, Jackson listens
to the life stories of his teammates.

"When Beno (Udrih), (Francisco) García or (Omri) Casspi talk, I soak it all
in," Jackson said. "I'm 24 years old, and I was raised without a father, so
they probably know a lot more about life than I do just from growing up in a
family home and me just having all these tragedies. I can't use that as an
excuse, because I'm not the type of guy."

And he's still getting a rush out of running up and down the court.
