Kings give New Orleans dose of 'Spanish Chocolate'

 Quique Peinado still hasn't made a dime off his most memorable literary
 moment.
 It was some six years ago that the Spanish writer dubbed Sergio Rodrguez
 "Spanish Chocolate," a tribute and comparison to former Kings point guard
 Jason Williams, whose flashy ways earned him the nickname "White Chocolate."

Sunday night at Arco Arena, Peinado and the rest of the announced crowd of
11,548 were rewarded with Rodrguez's finest outing of the season in the Kings'
112-96 win over New Orleans.

With Peinado watching as a friend and a fan, Rodríguez had a career-high 24
points, five assists and no turnovers.

The Kings won their third consecutive game and reached .500 for the second
time this season. It came against a Hornets team that had won four of its
previous five games despite being without point guard Chris Paul (ankle).
Sunday, New Orleans also was missing small forward Peja Stojakovic (personal
reasons).

Before being drafted 27th overall in 2006 and spending three oft-frustrating
seasons in Portland, Rodrguez was the runaway MVP of the European championships
for his under-18 Spanish team. His play prompted Jorge Sierra to ask Peinado to
write a story for his new Web site, Hoopshype.com, and the writer who now works
for Spanish newspaper Marca did it for free as a favor to his friend.

The buzz around Rodrguez had long since died down, though. While Trail
Blazers coach Nate McMillan wanted less risk as his reward, Rodrguez was
often mistake-prone and lacking confidence when the styles of player and
coach consistently contrasted. After Portland granted his trade request
with a draft-night deal to the Kings in June, Rodrguez said he has meshed
much better with Kings coach Paul Westphal.

But Rodrguez had hardly been Westphal's first choice at point guard.
He played in just five of the first nine games, averaging 7.2 minutes.
Through the first 12 games, Rodrguez scored a combined 24 points.

His role is surely on the rise, though, even if he's not living up to his
pass-first reputation. Rodrguez, who spent much of Sunday playing with
fellow point guard Beno Udrih, hit 9 of 14 shots.Only Tyreke Evans had more
attempts, hitting just 6 of 15. Rodrguez has scored in double digits in three
of the last four games.

While Rodrguez hasn't had the consistent playing time he sought, he said

"We see basketball different," Rodrguez said of he and McMillan. "It's

 to enjoy basketball, to be flashy, and to win games."

After a 26-26 first-quarter tie in which forward Jason Thompson (22 points
,14 rebounds) did most of the heavy lifting, Rodrguez scored 11 points in
the second quarter,when the Kings pulled away for a 57-45 halftime lead.
He finished even stronger, scoring 13 fourth-quarter points to help the
Kings pull away.

"Sergio been a complete pro," said Westphal, who was without the
services of center Spencer Hawes (bruised right knee, day-to-day).
"He has kind of kicked the door down (toward earning minutes) with
the way he played in practice … and his stints get longer and longer."
