Sticking with their usual pregame routine, Pete Carril fed passes to Tyreke
Evans for almost an hour at FedExForum on Monday night.

They might be the odd couple of the NBA. Carril, best known as the architect
of the famed "Princeton offense," is an 80-year-old assistant coach with the
Sacramento Kings, a small man with tufts of white hair who shuffles about the
court. Evans, one-and-done as a standout at the University of Memphis last
season, is a 20-year-old rookie with the Kings, a 6-5 point guard chiseled
from some sort of igneous rock.

Evans has made a smooth transition to the next level, and he had another

with 28 points and four assists, showing off a revamped shooting stroke
(10-of-18 from the field, 7-of-7 from the free-throw line) and underscoring
what many now consider to be a colossal blunder by the Grizzlies.

If Monday's game was the latest referendum on rookie center Hasheem Thabeet,

... he picked up four fouls in 13 minutes. The Kings took Evans at No. 4 and
he has thrived, ranking second among NBA rookies in scoring (19 points per
game) and leading them in minutes played (35.3 per game).

mess. Evans said he harbors no ill will toward Memphis for passing on him.

The biggest question with Evans during pre-draft workouts was his shooting
form, which was inconsistent at best and ugly at worst. He slung the ball
from behind his right ear. Kings coach Paul Westphal commissioned Carril to
work with Evans.

Evans has spent hours on his mechanics, working to square his shoulders and
draw the ball to the top of his forehead before releasing the shot. The

Evans was 13-of-21 from the field with 29 points, 10 assists and seven
rebounds.

Not quite everything. In college, he often found his progress to the basket
impeded by defenders who camped out in the paint -- though that never seemed
to affect him much. In the NBA, the rules allow for more spacing. As a
result, Evans feels he can be even more creative.

against Mike Conley. So he dribbled upcourt, backed Conley down on the left
side and scored two of the easiest points of his professional career. Hollins
opted to put O.J. Mayo on him, then Sam Young for stretches -- all without
much success.
