Tyreke Evans
Although his game is multi-faceted, this rookie keeps it simple off the
court. An evening of video games and watching an NBA game on his mobile phone
(his apartment doesn’t have access to NBA League Pass) keep Evans very
contented. A more involved night might be a visit to Arden Fair Mall.

“I think Sacramento’s pretty laid back,” Evans said. “I like that. I’m a
laid-back guy, so I’ve had no trouble fitting in. They have great basketball
fans here who really support the team.”

Speaking of team, Evans certainly has one off the court. Foremost is LaMont
Peterson, who has been Evans’ personal trainer since he was a ninth-grade
standout at American Christian High School in Aston, Pa. Peterson lives with
Evans in Sacramento and has remained in charge of his overall fitness, while
also taking a lead role in the rookie’s off-court life.

“I’m the eyes and ears for Tyreke and his family,” Peterson says, noting
that Reggie Evans remains Tyreke’s father figure from afar.

Reggie remains in Chester, Pa., a small city about 20 minutes from
Philadelphia. The second oldest of five brothers, he helped hone Tyreke’s
game as his AAU coach and has played an essential role in all aspects of his
life. Peterson says Reggie always saw “it” in Tyreke.

Like many NBA players, Tyreke hired a personal chef to ensure he always has a
nutritious meal. Dwayne Davis, a friend of Tyreke’s since age four, also
lives in Sacramento. With the three necessities in place – family, friends
and food – Evans is able to focus his attention on giving Kings fans reason
to cheer at ARCO Arena.

Though he is still new to the Northern California crowd, basketball has
always been of the utmost importance to Tyreke. It was that way while honing
his game on the playgrounds in Chester and it remains his focus as a rookie
with the Kings. On practice days he typically takes 1,000 shots or more, many
of them with Kings assistant coach and basketball guru Pete Carril watching
and critiquing nearby. If more work is required, it’s no problem.

I think that kid is really, really good. I watched him on tape and just how
he moves, I think he has some — this is, you hate to compare players like
this — but I think he’s got some Magic in him. He’s a big guard that can
see the floor. He’s unselfish. He gets to the rim. He uses his body very
well. He’s good in transition. He can rebound and push the ball. A small or
big guard doesn’t really faze him. He sees the floor extremely well. That
team is where they are because of Coach Westphal of course. Evans, he plays 3
positions — 1, 2 and 3 — who knows, when they get some of their guys back,
you may even see him at some 4 because he’s got a big body. He’s going to
be a very good player.

not bad. He can defend too. He’s a good player.
