This was not the debut Tyreke Evans envisioned.

Two hours into his tryout with the U.S. national team, Evans elevated for a
layup, came down on an opponent's foot and landed with a wince.

"I tweaked my left ankle," Evans explained Tuesday while slumped against a
wall in the UNLV gym, his foot encased in ice. "It's a little sore. I just
hope it doesn't swell tonight. The trainer wants me to get some treatment
back at the hotel. We'll see how it goes. Hopefully I can get back out there
tomorrow."

Though the Kings' young star didn't seem overly concerned about the extent of
the damage, he certainly didn't need the complications. The competition to
make the 12-man roster for next month's FIBA World Championship in Turkey is
deep and versatile and bruising enough.

Chauncey Billups has long been anointed the heir to longtime USA floor leader
Jason Kidd. Rajon Rondo recently changed his mind and brought his electric
game to the desert. Derrick Rose is considered a virtual lock. Russell
Westbrook is penciled in as a near-lock.

Before injuring the ankle, Evans, who at 20 is the youngest invitee, took
part in the conditioning drills and stretching exercises and was paired with
numerous guards in the controlled scrimmages. (College players joined the USA
prospects for scrimmaging purposes.)

Though he continued practicing after colliding with North Carolina 7-footer
Tyler Zeller, Evans afterward walked gingerly off the court.

Assuming he recovers and resumes practice today, Evans nonetheless should be
encouraged by two developments: (1) Krzyzewski likes big, powerful guards who
defend and pressure the ball; and (2) the number of available big men
continues to dwindle for a variety of reasons, suggesting a smaller
complement of players and more wide-open style.

session and returned to Oakland for X-rays. Earlier in the day, Robin Lopez
(back) and Amar'e Stoudemire (knees) became unavailable because of insurance
issues.

Privately, there has been some conversation about giving Evans a look at
small forward, though USA officials are particularly curious to evaluate his

The 6-foot-6 Evans, who outpolled Curry in the Rookie of the Year voting with
