May gets fresh start with Kings
阿梅，給我來十個饅頭！
There was a light moment in the Kings' players lounge Monday afternoon. And
this is a franchise that can use a few laughs.
在星期一的下午，一件好事發生在國王的球員休息室裡，這是一件值得你開心的事。
Before a media session, freshly signed free agent Sean May held up his new
jersey, bearing his trademark No. 42. The 6-foot-9 power forward showed both
sides of the garment, prompting Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie to
crack, "Same number on the back, too?" Yep, same number. But it belongs to a
new man.
在記者會之前，剛被簽下的Sean May高舉起他的新球衣展示給所有人看，上面有著他

"When I worked out for the Kings (in Las Vegas last month), I felt my career
was on the line," May said. "I still feel like that with the season coming. I
am ready for a fresh start. I will definitely get back to where I once was."

May is a skilled big man in the midst of a very mixed career. He was a high
school All-American in hoops-mad Indiana, and an NCAA championship leader at
North Carolina. It's the painful lows that have included ice packs and
surgeries at the most inopportune time – during his NBA career – that have
defined May of late and led him to Sacramento.

His fresh start begins now, after signing a one-year deal Monday for the NBA
veteran minimum of $884,881.

May has had three right-knee surgeries since becoming the 13th pick of the
2005 draft with the Charlotte Bobcats. The most troubling procedure came on
the eve of the 2007-08 season, when he had the dreaded microfracture surgery.

Microfracture surgery is not pleasant. It's a tricky procedure where holes
are drilled into the knee in an effort to induce scar-tissue buildup as a
replacement for missing or damaged cartliage, the buffer material in knees.
When it becomes bone-on-bone for athletes, it generally leads to one result:
career over.

For the Kings, microfracture brings up memories of Chris Webber, whose career
was stalled by the surgery. Others have come back, certainly, and May expects
to be a bounce-back player.
對國王而言，提到微創手術就不得不讓我們想起Webber，他就是因為這個手術而無法
回到顛峰狀況。當然也有成功的案例，而May 希望也能成為其中之一。
"I feel great, the best I have felt in a long time," May, 25, said. "All of
the doctors I have talked to and players that went through microfracture like
me, like Amare Stoudemire, told me that the thing I have on my side is youth."

May went from averaging 15.8 points and 10 rebounds in three decorated
seasons at North Carolina to playing just 58 games in his first two NBA
seasons. He missed the 2007-08 season and averaged 3.9 points and 2.9
rebounds in spot duty last season. He averaged 11.9 points and 6.7 rebounds
in 2006-07 before his knee started to slow him.

May last season was criticized in Charlotte by his coach, Larry Brown, and
fans for his conditioning. All wanted more value for their draft pick.
Without games, May's weight ballooned to more than 300 pounds.

發揮出價值，但沒打比賽的May整個人發福到了300磅。
"My NBA career, if I wrote a book, none of this would be in the chapters,"
said May, who now weighs about 265 pounds. "A lot of people in my position
have folded, and I refuse to do that. Sitting out was tough emotionally. It
took a lot out of me. It was the first time I had struggled. I read the
comments and heard them. People who know me know I work extremely hard, and I
don't think a lot of people understand (microfracture surgery), the hours or
rehab, how it takes 10 months to come back."
「在我的NBA 生涯中，這些都不算什麼。如果別人處在和我相同的處境，可能早已認
定失敗，但我拒絕被打上失敗這個標誌。那段坐在場外的時間真的很痛苦，這是我第一次
受到如此的挫折。那些五四三的我都讀了也聽了，但認識我的人就知道我有多努力，那些
批評我的人根本不知道微創手術是什麼，不知道我用了多少時間復健，也不知道我得花十
個月回來這地方。」現在265 磅的May 說。
May said he spoke to his father, former Indiana great and NBA veteran Scott
May, regularly during his down time.
May 說這段生涯低潮裡，他常找他的父親聊聊。
LaSalle Thompson, a former Kings post player, is an assistant coach with
Charlotte who worked with May last season.
Lasalle Thompson是前國王球員，而上季他是山貓隊的助理教練。
"Those comments, the criticism, they bothered me, and I know they bothered
Sean," Thompson said. "He's worked really hard to get to this point. I think
he'll fit in really well with the Kings. He can shoot, pass, post up,
rebound. And he understands the game. He has a really high basketball IQ, and
he's such a good guy, you pull for him."
「那些評論、批評都深深困擾著我們，而他也很努力讓自已再回到狀態，我認為他能

Petrie is certainly pulling for him. May said he isn't limited on the court
anymore, and Petrie said he checked off on all sorts of drills.

的訓練。
"It's a great opportunity for him," Petrie said. "It's something I think can
work out well for us, too. His talent was never in question but it's been his
health. He's gone through one of the toughest things an athlete can go
through."
