A nation holds its breath as 21-year-old Israeli forward Omri Casspi
approaches his debut with the Kings

Omri Casspi knew better than everyone else, or certainly, before everyone
else. At age 15 – before he went on a date or finished high school – he
decided that he was the chosen one.

    Casspi比誰都還清楚，也比誰都還早知道，在他完成高中學業之前，他決定他就是那

He would be the first. The first Israeli selected in the opening round of the
NBA draft. The first to live among Kings and Lakers. The first to
successfully represent this basketball-crazed country of approximately 7.5
million people, few of whom measure up to NBA standards.

Former Israeli stars Mickey Berkowitz, Doron Sheffer, Oded Kattash, Yotam
Halperin and Lior Eliyahu all flirted with the notion of careers in the
National Basketball Association, but for various reasons – timing, injury,
attitude, aptitude – never made it to training camp.

Casspi will make it to camp. As a first-round selection of the Sacramento
Kings and the 23rd pick overall, the 6-foot-9 small forward – all grown up

"We have had other good players try for NBA, and all were nice guys," said
Zvika Sherf, Casspi's former coach with the Israeli national team and Maccabi

Frankly, in terms of basketball, Israelis are tired of being shoved aside.
While soccer is the most popular sport, Israeli Premier League power Maccabi
Tel Aviv is the nation's treasure, often mistaken for the national team. The
fact that 60 nations have been represented in the NBA before Casspi even
attempts his first dunk remains a chronic source of irritation.

the NBA. Latvia, Italy, France, Russia, but no Israel? This is like an insult
to us."

It's not as if NBA officials have failed to extend a hand, either. In an
attempt to expand its global tentacles into the conflict-weary Middle East,
the NBA for years has conducted clinics in Lebanon, Qatar, Bahrain, Iran,
Iraq and Israel, frequently in conjunction with the U.S. State Department.
Yet even a small exodus of Middle Easterners toward the NBA has failed to
materialize; the game that has gone global continues to skip over the region.

Casspi's first-round selection is such an anomaly – such a national
sensation – that champagne flowed throughout Tel Aviv long after the draft.
On a video taped by an Israeli TV crew at his parents' home during the June
25 draft, Casspi's mother, Ilana, is seen pacing and cleaning while peeking
at the screen. His father, Shimon, frowns and frets while standing a few feet
away. Omri agonizes on the couch, thrusting his face into his hands, moaning
in disappointment as other players are selected, their names and remarks
scripted in Hebrew near the bottom of the screen.

    Casspi的首輪中選是一件破天荒的大事，是一件國際件的事件，還讓台拉維夫整天都

zillionth time. "When he calls my name he is smiling. He is Jewish, you know.
See!"

Jubilant friends and relatives dive onto the couch, onto Casspi, who
disappears inside the scrum. Drenched in champagne, he strips down to an
undershirt and is showered again. Throughout the day, his image flashed
across TV screens. His cell phone never stopped ringing; he heard from
teammates and politicians and the individual that every young Israeli
basketball player idolizes.

    他的親人和朋友在那一刻紛紛衝向他，用香檳給Casspi來了一次淋浴，害他得去換一

"When I heard David Stern say, 'At No. 23, Omri Casspi,' my body was
shaking," related Berkowitz, the former Maccabi star and most beloved of all
Israeli sports icons. "Just shaking."

Hoops battles with Mom

Tel Aviv is arresting at dusk, the modern and ancient, the commercial and the
charming, colliding along the Mediterranean seafront promenade of hotels,
shops and cafes. The Old Clock Tower in Jaffa, perched like a sentry on the
hilly southern tip of the picturesque stretch, casts its light in a northerly
direction, illuminating the activity below.

    黃昏時的Tel Aviv，現代感中又有古老的氣息。地中海風格的飯店、咖啡廳林立的同
時，世界上最年長的鐘樓也在南方的山丘上俯望這個城市，用他們的燈光照亮了以下的場
景。

Families barbecue on the lawn areas late into the night, their children
scampering around, tossing Frisbees or kicking soccer balls. Joggers and
skateboarders cruise along the pathway. Youngsters and adults alike make full
use of the weight-training equipment that materializes every few hundred
yards – a relatively recent addition to encourage physical fitness.

    許多家庭在這薄暮時分聚集在草地上烤肉，小孩子們跳著蹦著，丟飛盤或是踢著足球

While Casspi frequented the seafront establishments when he came of age, and
admits a fondness for the night life, he cultivated his basketball passion
about 15 miles to the south in Yavne, a quiet middle-class suburb of
two-story houses, manicured lawns and the occasional hoop in the driveway.

    在Casspi漸漸長大的同時，他也愛上了這裡的夜間生活。而他的籃球生活則是成長於

Invariably taller than his boyhood friends, Omri patterned his versatile game
after former Kings star Hedo Turkoglu.

Casspi's connection to the Kings is an unexpected bonus: Sherf, who coached
Casspi with the national team and briefly with Maccabi, coached former King
Peja Stojakovic during the small forward's final season in Greece.

While Shimon Casspi supervised his younger son's basketball endeavors,
insisting that coaches play Omri away from the basket to develop his passing
and play-making skills, it was his mother, Ilana, an elementary schoolteacher
and accomplished player in her own right, who goaded him into endless
one-on-one contests in the driveway.

"She would throw up hook shots, play with her back to the basket," recalled

Casspi soon set out on the path that preceded his selection by the Kings. At
age 17, he made his professional debut with Maccabi. A few months later, he
was loaned to Hapoel Galil Elyon in northern Israel, where he played
extensive minutes for Kattash. He returned to Maccabi for the 2007-09
seasons, earning consideration for European Player of the Year (fourth) and
recognition as Israel's premier small forward.

Sherf was far from pleased.

"The national team is my life," the coach said.

Longtime Maccabi President Shimon Mizrahi, the most powerful basketball
figure in Israel for the past 40 years, wasn't thrilled about his former
star's decision, either.

    長期擔任Maccabi 總裁的Shimon Mizrahi，已經是以色列的籃球象徵長達四十年之久
，他對Casspi的決定也是不怎麼開心。

Yet unlike Berkowitz and Kattash, one-time NBA prospects who pleaded
unsuccessfully to be released from their Maccabi contracts, Casspi's deal
included a $250,000 buyout clause, averting a potential crisis.

    還好不像Berkowitz和Kattash一樣，這兩位在中選後都沒辦法前往NBA ，他們的合約
讓他們得留下來，而Casspi的合約上則有一個二十五萬的買斷條款，讓他可以避免這件事
。

"Nobody had an option (opt out clause) in their contract back when I played,"
Berkowitz said. "We didn't know better. I went to Mizrahi and said: 'The
Atlanta Hawks want me. I can be first European and first Israeli in NBA.'
They said no.

The matter still rankles. A trim and athletic figure at 54, Berkowitz sighed
several times while telling his story. "Looking back on my career," he added,
"the one thing I am missing is to make the NBA. The dream didn't come true.

Touring his homeland

Casspi drives up to the Savoy Hotel in a dusty, dark blue, Toyota
sport-utility vehicle, parks in a restricted zone on the side street about 20
yards from the seaside promenade, and bounds up the steps to the entrance.

    Casspi開著他髒兮兮的深藍豐田SUV 到了Savoy Hotel ，在距離二十碼處停好了車，
走上了入口處的台階。

Dressed in the casual uniform of his generation – baggy gym shorts, T-shirt
and sneakers, and dark shades rimming days-old facial growth – he could pass
for any other 21-year-old. Except, of course, that he's taller and more
recognizable than most. Because he lacks the basketball gravitas of the
revered Berkowitz or Tal Brody, teammates during Maccabi's memorable victory
over CSKA Russia in the 1977 European Cup, Casspi is as much a curiosity as a
celebrity.

    他穿的是他的世代常見的服裝，運動短褲、T恤 、球鞋，看來就像一般的二十一歲男

Passers-by shout, "Omri, Omri," and earn a wave in response. A fan thrusts a
pen in his hand, pleading for an autograph. The front desk clerks smile. The
security guard near the narrow entryway observes closely, purposefully.

Easing back into the driver's seat of his vehicle, Casspi turns and asks, his
eyebrows arched, "Do you know about this hotel?"

This particular stretch of seafront, in fact, offers an acute reminder that
violence can strike at any time, with Israelis and some of their Arab
neighbors engaged in the war that never ends. In 1975, the eight-story,
55-room Savoy was attacked by terrorists who arrived nearby in small boats,
brazenly walked in and seized control of the hotel, then killed 11 hostages
before blowing themselves up during an Israeli rescue attempt.

three deaths; and the Stage Club, where five patrons died in a suicide attack
in 2005.

While navigating through traffic on the curving, elevating outskirts of
Jerusalem, Casspi is an engaging, outspoken conversationalist. His expressive
brown eyes and animated angular features add context to virtually every
anecdote, often reflecting a mischievous sense of humor.

His close-knit family, of Moroccan and Polish descent, remains a favorite

He praises his older brother, Eitan, a former Israeli paratrooper, for
placing career plans on hold to accompany him to Sacramento. He boasts about

"I thought about taking Butch to Sacramento," said Casspi, "but he is very
attached to my sister. That wouldn't seem right."

Asked about the Kings, he laughs. "Great, great guys. Francisco Garcia.
During summer league, JT (Jason Thompson) and Donte Green tease me. They say
I'm a celebrity in Israel, so they want to come visit me, meet all the girls."

As he drives into the plaza near the Western Wall, an attendant directs him
to a prime parking spot, suggesting there are perks to being a star athlete
just about everywhere. Casspi attracts a throng of admirers as he emerges
from the vehicle, but intent on being respectful of Judaism's holiest site,
he gently discourages autograph seekers and strides toward the area that
functions as an open air synagogue.

    他將車開進了哭牆附近的廣場，在專人指引下停好了車，還邊開玩笑說應該要有個明
星運動員的停車位。當他一下車，馬上就有支持者跑上前來，因為他尊敬這個神聖的所在

Worshippers sit at the foot of the massive stone structure, reading or
reciting audibly from prayer books, several rocking back and forth or with
heads pressed against the Wall. Despite the blistering 100-degree
temperature, many of the Orthodox males are wearing long-sleeve black
jackets, slacks and shoes, shaded only by their wide-brimmed hats. Female
visitors are encouraged to wear shawls and an element of head covering, but
the dress code is optional, and wardrobes vary drastically. Members of both
genders can be seen in shorts and T-shirts.

    有些禮拜者坐著閱讀祈禱書，有些則在拜著哭牆。儘管溫度高達一百度，許多傳統男

Casspi walks back into the heat and announces lunch plans at nearby Abu
Ghosh, an Arab village in the hills just west of Jerusalem.

"Now you will taste the best hummus you ever had," he said. "It's not far, on

The expressway exit leads to a winding two-lane road that meanders past
houses tucked into the arid hillsides, then tightens at a cluster of outdoor
cafes and restaurants. As two cats stroll casually in front of the stopped
SUV, Casspi faces a dilemma: Which restaurant? Influenced by a man who
motions aggressively toward a parking slot, Casspi maneuvers his SUV against
a building, thanks the man for his help, and walks inside the cafe.

    高速公路的出口後是一條彎曲的兩線道，道路旁有許多家咖啡廳和餐廳。在兩隻貓晃

He peruses the menu and then, in Hebrew, orders enough food to satisfy the
Kings starting lineup. Three different types of hummus. Two stacks of pita
bread. Bowls of salad and pickles. Plates of skewered meats. Plenty of
bottled water.

    他翻了翻菜單，接著用希伯來文點了足以餵飽國王先發五人的菜量。三種不同的豆泥
、兩疊麵餅、大碗的沙拉及醃菜、整盤的烤肉串還有瓶裝水。

But it's all about the hummus, his favorite Middle Eastern delicacy.

    其中最重要的還是豆泥，他最愛的中東美食。

"Have you ever tasted hummus like this?" he asked. "I know you haven't. No
way, no way. It's the best in the world."

    「你有嚐過這樣的豆泥嗎？我知道你一定沒有，這是世上最棒的一款。」他說。

He is told about a Greek restaurant in Sacramento.

"Ha!" he replied. "We'll see."

Preparing for the NBA

NBA！我來啦！

In conversations about Casspi with former teammates, coaches, relatives,
Israeli basketball greats and European basketball observers, a profile
emerges of a relentless, almost ruthlessly competitive athlete that contrasts
sharply with his amiable off-court personality.

    在和他的前隊友、教練、相關人士，以及以色列、歐洲的籃球專家交談過後，我們得

Casspi's game is one of fluid chaos, of boundless energy, athleticism and

frame – 6-foot-9 and 225 pounds of edges and angles – merits immediate
attention from the Kings trainers.

Kattash and Sherf, two of his former coaches, present Casspi as a casualty of
inadequate training methods and facilities, perhaps even institutional
neglect.

"In Israel, we don't do it right," Kattash said. "It's the system. You don't
have trainers. You don't have the right guy in the weight room. It's not
because we're lazy; we know how to play. But this other stuff is not a
priority."

Of Casspi, he offered, with a slight smile: "I love Casspi. Very talented. He
can run and rebound. He can shoot. He gets a little bit wild.

"What makes him different from other (Israeli players) is that he likes
contact. But he needs the American way of doing things, to put some strength
on, to gain some structure. He needs four-five months just working on his
body."

訓練，比方說加些體重。他大概需要四到五個月的時間來強化體能。」

While reiterating the differences between his former players Stojakovic and
Casspi, Sherf theorized that Stojakovic, a Serb who moved to Greece at age 16
because of the conflict in the Balkans, gained an advantage from the
resilience of the basketball programs in the former Yugoslavia.

"We (Israelis) became too soft," the coach said after a national team
practice, shaking his head. "We are not working hard enough. We are a little

Casspi's combativeness became a water cooler topic when he accidentally
elbowed Austin Daye during his final pre-draft workout, splitting the skin
above the Gonzaga star's eye.

"Just a little blood," Casspi said, downplaying the incident. "These things
happen.

talented guys, the tallest guys like the Serbians, the Croatians, the

He knows he can do this, he insists. He has size. He believes he has talent.
And that slim physique can be developed and molded to fit. Saying he wants to
be "as ready as possible physically and mentally," Casspi will spend the next
three weeks at a basketball training center for NBA and collegiate players in
Florida.

    他知道他可以做到，他也堅持相信自已。他擁有身材，他認為自已具有天份。他的身

Back here in his homeland, they will be watching intently, viewing telecasts
in the wee hours, awaiting history whenever. Kattash. Sherf. Mizrahi. Brody.
Sheffer. His parents. His sister. His friends. His country.

    而他的家鄉也會注視著他，等待著歷史的發生。Kattash、Sherf、Mizrahi、Bordy、
Sheffer 、他的雙親、妹妹Aviv、朋友、國家，都在期待著。

"Omri, he will live the dream for us," Berkowitz said. "We will be proud."
