Transition is a well applied term when discussing NBA rookies. Seemingly
everything resides in transitional mode – learning the fast-paced NBA game,
adjusting to a new city, making friends and all the complexities that arrive
with finding a comfortable living situation.
With all of those modifications happening concurrently, rookies must also
learn to feed their teammates. In the case of Sacramento Kings first-year
player Jon Brockman, it means providing bagels and cream cheese at every
practice.
Heading into the second week of December, the Kings designated bagel boy had
yet to forget. While teammates can appreciate Brockman’s diligence,
collectively they are hoping for at least one slip up.
“He’s boring,” moans teammate Spencer Hawes. “We like rookies who whine
about things or don’t do what they are supposed to do. Jon never gripes or
complains. He never does anything wrong.”
In the case of this year’s rookie crop, the Kings have a mature group in
Brockman, Tyreke Evans and Omri Casspi. The three rooks have regularly fed
the veterans with nary a turnover. More importantly, they have taken care of
business on the court and been key contributors to a successful early season.
Here’s a look at how the Kings rookies are adjusting to their first season
in Sacramento:
Omri Casspi
The first Israeli-born player drafted in the NBA’s first round, his goal was
to make the team and garner another coveted distinction – becoming the first
Israeli to play an NBA game.
。
Making it even more special, Casspi’s dream has been shared by his older
brother, Eitan. He lives with Omri in a rented Sacramento home and has become
a rabid Kings fan. Naturally, his favorite Kings player is his baby bro.
Eitan currently runs a Web site baring the family name – Casspi18.com.
Eitan
Casspi
http://casspi18.com/ 。
“It has always been Omri’s dream to be in the NBA, so in a way we are both
living that dream right now,” Eitan said.
Before being drafted in June, the family considered the ramifications of Omri
making the NBA and a plan was put in place. Eitan, 25, would come along and
help make the transition run smoother, taking control of his brother’s
off-court responsibilities. The brothers share a car, although Eitan is
usually behind the wheel. At home, he lets Omri drive the conversation and
acts as a sounding board.
“It’s huge,” says Omri, 21. “I go back home, my brother is there and we
can speak in our own language. I can talk about my ups and downs and he
listens. He supports me in everything I do.”
Support has also come from the Jewish community in the Sacramento region.
When the Casspis arrived in early August to get acclimated with American
life, long before the season began, the Jewish community welcomed the
brothers with open arms. They advised the Casspis on where to live and helped
them rent a house, purchase a car and provided guided tours of Sacramento.
“When we got to Sacramento we didn’t know anything,” Omri said. “But
thanks to people in the Jewish community, everything is good now. We have
been treated very well by them and all Kings fans.”
The help also came from within the Kings locker room with Francisco Garcia
heading the greeting committee. Casspi calls Garcia a great role model who
has tried to help all the rookies with their transition to the NBA.
Garcia says veterans like former Kings player Mike Bibby made his rookie
season much easier, so he is passing along the same type of kindness.
“We have great rookies,” Garcia said. “They listen, they want to learn and
they work hard. It’s tough for them. They typically come here from college
where they were the man, but here they’re not. There is a lot to learn on
and off the court, so I just try to help them out.”
