Omri Casspi wasn't just a rookie last season.
omri上個球季不單純只是個菜鳥
The Kings forward was history in action as the NBA's first Israeli-born
player. That meant merchandise sales by other teams, meetings with
Commissioner David Stern in New York and rabid cheering sections at many road
games.
他是第一位以色列出生的球員。在各地都形成一股旋風。
Casspi returned to Israel after the season to see his family and friends. He
didn't need the reminder, but back home, Casspi isn't just another player –
he's a star.

"Everywhere I went, there was a life-size poster of this guy," said Kings
guard Dionte Christmas, who played for Hapoel Afula in Israel last season.
"I'd go to every store, and he had his own Nike shirts. Casspi is definitely
a big deal over there."

Casspi returned to the United States and headed to Las Vegas, where he began
an intense five-week workout program under trainer Joe Abunassar.

Casspi values the adulation back home. But once he returned to America, he
focused on getting stronger and making more of a defensive impact.

said. "It's something that really warmed my heart and gave me a little more
power to keep going forward and keep going strong."

Casspi's rookie season was successful on many levels. After looking overwhelmed during last year's NBA Summer League, Casspi emerged during the
regular season.

He averaged 10.3 points and played in the Rookie Challenge during NBA
All-Star Weekend. But as the season wore on, Casspi's production slipped. The
Kings love his competitiveness but want him to have the stamina to maintain
it.

Kings coach Paul Westphal deactivated Casspi on March 7 against Oklahoma City
to rest him.

Westphal said. "He knows what the problem is, and now he's got to find the
solution."

Casspi's Las Vegas workouts appear to be part of the solution, as is playing
in the summer league. He believes his offseason program will increase his
effectiveness near the basket on offense and defense.

"I feel like I've gotten a lot stronger," Casspi said. "I weigh 224 now, 15
more pounds from last year. I feel like I can defend better the threes and

Casspi also hopes to add dimensions to his game.

Kings summer-league coach Mario Elie said the team doesn't want Casspi to
fall in love with three-pointers. Of his 672 field-goal attempts last season,
203 came from beyond the arc.

The three-point shot was very good to Casspi early in the season, something
Elie called a "tease."

"The thing about the NBA is that they figure you out," Elie said. "They watch
a lot of film, and after the All-Star break, he tended to struggle a little
bit."

Elie will emphasize in the summer league that guards get the ball to Casspi
in the post if he is open.

Casspi should have plenty of chances to work on his post game in the summer
league. The Kings open Monday against the Detroit Pistons.

Casspi hopes to play better in the summer league than he did last year, when
he averaged 8.0 points and made only 29.5 percent of his shots.

"I'm very excited to wear the Kings jersey again," said Casspi, who will play
for Israel in the Euroleague Championships next month. "After last year with
the bad summer league that I had, I'm excited to play a little bit better."
