Greene’s Future Still In Air By Pete Thamel / April 2, 2008, 11:50 am Syracuse Coach Jim Boeheim said Tuesday that the star freshman forward Donte’ Greene still had not 100 percent confirmed to him that he was coming back for his sophomore season. Greene averaged 17.7 points a game this season but failed to dominate for large stretches, especially against stiffer competition in Big East play. Greene relied too much on outside shots and lacked the polish to score consistently inside. “There’s so many things that people tell kids,” Boeheim said. “I don’t know. He knows he should come back. He said that. You just don’t know what people are going to be. He’s as far away as you can be from being ready. Some mock draft has him 17 or 18. I don’t think that he’d go there. He’d maybe go 25 or 26; that’s to a good team that’s not going to play him. They ’d put him someplace and he’s not going to be happy doing that.” Then Boeheim offered a pitch that many coaches are making to their players right now to stay another year. The incoming freshman class is appreciably worse than the current crop of college freshmen. There’s no Michael Beasley, Kevin Love or Derrick Rose types coming next season. (The country’s No. 1 player, the Georgetown-bound Greg Monroe, has some nice physical tools but is hardly garnering Dwight Howard comparisons, especially because some think he doesn’t play hard consistently.) “He can go from No. 20 to No. 5 in the draft,” Boeheim said of Green. “ There’s going to be no real freshmen of interest. You’re going to move up because of that. Plus, he’s not ready.” Boeheim lamented being “one play away” from making the N.C.A.A. tournament, pointing to the Orange’s meltdown in the final minutes in a home loss to Pittsburgh. With guard Eric Devendorf and Andy Rautins returning from injury, plus starters Jonny Flynn, Paul Harris and Arinze Onuaku returning, it could be one of Boeheim’s most talented teams. “Almost as good as when we had Carmelo,” Boeheim said, noting they wouldn’ t have anyone quite as talented as Carmelo Anthony. “Donte would be closer to him. We’d have better players than the other positions. 以下是 DraftExpress 對他的速寫評語 Strengths: ‧ Size ‧ Frame ‧ Fluidity ‧ Perimeter shooting ability ‧ NBA range ‧ Ability to elevate/create separation/get shot off ‧ Pull-up jumper ‧ Pick and pop potential ‧ Budding/basic back to basket game ‧ Overall skill-level 優點:體型、流暢度好、具備 NBA射程、投射能力佳和整體技巧不錯 Weaknesses: ‧ Poor wingspan ‧ Stuck between 3 and 4 ‧ Lateral quickness to defend NBA SFs? NBA Comparison: Rashard Lewis / Marvin Williams Strengths: A long and versatile player that possesses tremendous perimeter skills ... An athletic specimen with enormous potential ... Deadly out of the triple threat, where he utilizes jabs and pump fakes to attack the opposition ... A shot maker with the ability to convert on a variety of acrobatic and off-balance shots ... His skill, athleticism and size make him a difficult match up ... His leaping ability and body control allow him to finish over and around people in the lane ... He possesses a terrific spin move ... Also shows great form and range on his shot ... Shows a nice pull up off the dribble ... He's willing to mix it up in the post where his repertoire is growing, has a nice right mini-hook and a very effective fade away ... Has a good feel for the ball, combined with his length make him a dangerous shot blocker as well as a disruptor in the passing lanes ... Attacks the offensive glass aggressively ... Weaknesses: Far too often settles for fade away 3 point shots instead of trying to create a better shot. This was especially true late in the season which could have been a product of fatigue ... Shot nearly twice as many 3 pointers as free throws, which shouldn't be the case considering his size and athleticism advantage over most opponents ... Needs to get stronger and bulk up, shows an excellent frame, but still needs to add strength ... Struggles finishing after getting hit ... Shies away from contact which is reflected by his measly 3.8 free throw attempts per game ... Dribbles with his head down and is somewhat uncomfortable handling the ball in transition, also struggles dribbling against more aggressive defenders that put pressure on him ... Although his form is very nice, his shot is somewhat inconsistent and he settles for too many 3's (over half of his FG attempts come from behind the arc)... Has a tendency to coast and defer to less skilled teammates ... Needs to play with more of an edge and develop a killer instinct; he should be dominating the college game with his versatility ... Defense is a bit of a concern because he has minimal experience playing man to man, and seems to be very lazy about his stance and anticipation ... His length and athleticism should help to make up for his less than ideal lateral speed and quickness ... Still a very young and raw player with a lot to work with, that needs to learn the nuances of the game ... The reason Donte slipped so far was because he played a very immature and selfish game last year -- taking half of his shots from 3pt land, and just chucking up garbage with no conscience, not trying on defense, and just generally being a knucklehead. Its why the Tim Thomas comparisons might be the most apt for the time being. But he's certainly got amazing potenital if we can reach him and get him to settle down and do the things it takes to win. And the most encouraging thing? He's 19. That is the advantage of nabbing really young guys -- have so much room to grow. If he's a 23 yr old knucklehead, that just might be who he is. But at 19 many of us were less than focused, and so now you just wait on the maturity and see if he gets a hold of his considerable gifts.
